Zach De La Rocha w/DJ Shadow - March of Death

I was born with the voice of a riot, a storm
lightening the function, the form, far from the norm
I won't follow like cattle, I'm more like the catalyst
calm in the mix of battle
who let the cowboy on the saddle? He don't know a
missle from a gavel;
para terror troopin flippin loops of death upon innocent flesh
but I'm back in the cipher my foes and friends, witha verse and a pen
against a line I won't toe or defend, instead I curse at murderous men
in suits of professionals who act like animals
this man child, ruthless and wild
who gonna chain this beast back on the leash?
this Texas furor, for sure a, compassionless con who
serve a , lethal needle to the poor, the cure for crime is murder?
I was born with the voice of a riot, a storm
lightening the function, the form, far from the norm
I won't follow like cattle, I'm more like the catalyst
calm in the mix of battle
who let the cowboy on the saddle? He don't know a
missle from a gavel;
on the left ,on the left, left, RIGHT left
on the left ,on the left, left, RIGHT left
on the left ,on the left, left, RIGHT left
but it's just a march of death
I read the news today, oh boy, a snap shot of a midnight ploy
vexed and powerless, devoured my hours I'm motionless with no rest
'cause a scream now holds the sky, under another high-tech driveby
a lie is a lie this God is an eagle or a condor for war nothing more
Islam peace, Islam stare into my eye brother please off our knees
to beef now we feed their disease, interlocked our hands across seas
what is a flag but a shroud out loud, and outside my window is a faceless crowd
'cause a cowering child just took her last breath, on snare in the march of death
on the left, on the left, left, RIGHT, left
on the left ,on the left, left, RIGHT left
on the left ,on the left, left, RIGHT left
on the left ,on the left, left, RIGHT left
but it's just a march of death
here it comes the sound of terror from above
he flex his Texas twisted tongue
the poor lined up to kill in desert slums
for oil that burn beneath the desert sun
now we spit flame to flip this game
we are his targets taking aim
we're the targets taking aim
all his targets are taking aim

I'm not going to post any lyrics here that other people wrote; that being against the copyright laws, but I was raised on Pete Seeger's union songs and being a steward in the USWA I get passed along a lot of new stuff too. I like most of the old stuff. Of new stuff I like Working Man(Rita Mcneil) and Men of Steel(Lennie Gallant.

Cuba being still an issue we can't forget La Guantanamera.

A lot of what I write is kinda sociopolitical stuff too.

It's funny this comes up, an old parody song from the P.E.T. era has been going through my head for the last few days. It's a take off from You Picked a Fine Time To leave Me Lucille and it's called You Picked a Bad Time To leave Me Margaret.

I will post a bit of lyric after all, to an old union song which is based on an old gospel song called Lonesome Valley. It's called You Gotta Go Down and Join The Union and it's for all you Wal Mart employees.

You gotta go down and join the union
You got to join it by yourself
Ain’t nobody here can join it for you
You gotta go down and join the union by yourself

I wrote something a couple of years ago to express my horror ay the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire. It contains a few lines from some of my favourite union tunes.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire

Way back in nineteen one and one the workers had no rights.
The unions weren't strong enough to help them win their fights.
In New York City stood a building ten proud stories tall.
When the smoke had cleared away it wasn't hurt at all.

Which side are you on? Which side are you on?

Greene Street at Washington Place was where the bodies piled,
One hundred, forty one of them. I bet the devil smiled,
At the men that locked the fire escapes to keep them in,
Keeping them from going out and wasting time, their sin.

You gotta go down and join the union. You got to join it for yourself.

On half hour of Hell was witnessed that day on the Earth.
Speeding up the cause of workers' rights and unions birth.
Screaming, shoving, jumping, dying, let us not forget.
Everything still isn't right. The unions fight on yet.

We shall overcome. We shall overcome some day.

Wedged against the fire escape or broken on the ground,
Laying in the corners overcome with smoke were found,
Bodies of the victims of the company's great greed.
Workers, let us let them know they can't repeat this deed.

We shall not, we shall not be moved.
We shall overcome. Hey sisters, we shall overcome.
Which side are you on? Hey people, which side are you on?
You gotta go down and join the union...........

More recently, like about a week ago, I wrote a song to celebrate the USWA victory in getting the Westray Bill passed. It's likely still full of spelling mistakes etc.

Men of Steel Hearts of Gold

There's a steelworker's hat there in his locker that'll never know a head
again no more.
There's a steel lunch box sitting on the table, with nothing but a dried up
apple core
There's a steel thermos set beside the lunch box with a cup of java in it,
growing cold
There's a steel worker laying pinned six hundred feet below who'll never
know the joys in growing old.
There's a man of steel dying in the darkness of a mine that should have
been condemned years back to close
There's a woman waiting home, she'll wait forever all alone, never more
he'll bring her home a red red rose
There's a murmer as he whispers in the darkness, her name, his heart of
gold then beats no more
There's a million steel workers who won't let him die in vain. Justice is
the cry we rally for

Men of steel, hearts of gold
Fight for right, be strong and bold
Pass along to everyone the battle cry
Make the company man pay
For the life he throws away
And that man of steel will never, ever die

There's a law now says the men who push the pencils must take
responsibility at last
There's a spine of steel growing in this country that saw to it the Westray
bill was passed
There's a brighter future shining for our children, they're no more to be
ground beneath the wheel
Stand beside me brother, sister, proudly side by side we'll fight. Hearts
of gold wrapped up in wills made out of steel.

I went to see them, oh Christ, so long ago they had dodo powered amps. In fact, the night I did go to see them, in Kingston, at the arena at the university, Jock Hardy arena? their main amps blew up and they played through hardly any equipment at all. They played nearly all night because they felt bad about that. I was gowed.

'Rockin' In The Free World' - Neil Young

There's colors on the street
Red, white and blue
People shufflin' their feet
People sleepin' in their shoes
But there's a warnin' sign
on the road ahead
There's a lot of people sayin'
we'd be better off dead
Don't feel like Satan,
but I am to them
So I try to forget it,
any way I can.

(Chorus)
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world.

I see a woman in the night
With a baby in her hand
Under an old street light
Near a garbage can
Now she puts the kid away,
and she's gone to get a hit
She hates her life,
and what she's done to it
There's one more kid
that will never go to school
Never get to fall in love,
never get to be cool.

(Chorus)

We got a thousand points of light
For the homeless man
We got a kinder, gentler,
Machine gun hand
We got department stores
and toilet paper
Got styrofoam boxes
for the ozone layer
Got a man of the people,
says keep hope alive
Got fuel to burn,
got roads to drive.

(Chorus)
