I'm posting the same questions from the CTV cited poll here just for giggles.

MONTREAL — A new public-opinion poll suggests Quebecers still have an appetite for independence if they don't get constitutional reform.

Given a choice of three options, independence was the most popular choice among poll respondents asked what they would want if the Constitution isn't revised.

The Leger Marketing poll was commissioned by a group of academics just before the 30th anniversary of the patriation of the Constitution.

The law of the land was approved by every province except Quebec. Later attempts to reopen the discussion resulted in spectacular failure, and divided the country.

The new survey says 44.5 per cent of Quebecers would support separating from Canada if the Constitution could not be changed enough to satisfy the majority of the province.

Nearly 39 per cent say the province should stay in the federation even if no changes are made to the Constitution; 16.8 per cent were undecided.

The results also suggest that nearly 71 per cent of Quebecers believe the Quebec government should take the first step to propose changes be made to the Constitution.

But it's unclear whether such a move would bear any fruit. The survey results from other provinces suggest there's almost no desire outside the province to change the Constitution to grant more power to Quebec.

The poll surveyed more than 2,000 people this month across Canada, around half of whom live in Quebec. The survey has a margin of error of 2.2 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

Sure it would. If Quebec were independent then they could tax all of the rich people at confiscatory rates and then they could tax and regulate corporations into penury. Naturally, these policies would produce a veritable worker's paradise and prosperity would be the order of the day!

I was just reading up on this, in fact I was going to post the same thing .

What I would like to know if the people of Quebec even know why they object to the constitution or if they simply object to it out of the shear conditioning of being told for so many years that they should.

Lévesque wanted an "opt out" clause but is that still the reason for why Quebec won’t endorse the constitution today? What reforms are they looking for? To be honest I don’t think Quebecers even know themselves what reforms they want.

I’d love to hear from someone on the forum who’s from Quebec chime in on this. It would be interesting to get their perspective on this issue.

This is simple, as it always seems more controversial for the media or some people to point out the ''minority'' separatist point of view instead of the silent ''majority'' of Quebecers that do not want a sovereign nation.

Your post is about right, dino. With Francophone Quebeckers there is very little understanding of what it is about. And almost no grasp of the fact that independence means a separate country.

Back in the late 70s, one group I belonged to, we called it the Dual Language Community, did a survey in which we asked the questions in all there nakedness, The result was a resounding defeat for any separation.

Not surprisingly there was little media coverage of that. Funnily, the polling firm we employed got cold feet and wanted tp back out before completing the survey. (It was a Quebec firm). We held it to its contract.

If the Bloc wins the next election which they seem to be winning than separatism could crop up again. Lets face it separatism is a emotional issue based on culture clash. Right now the federal conservative and provincial liberal governments have been basically anti-Quebec in their policies. They have really pissed off the people of Quebec due to this and the separatist movement could creep up again shortly due to strong emotions. I was predicting this right near the start of the last federal election but no one seemed to believe me. Now it is an even stronger possibility with the way Charest has handled the student movement.
