Last week, Stephen Harper called the budget deal reached between NDP Leader Jack Layton and Prime Minister Martin “the most disgraceful thing I've seen in all my years on Parliament Hill.” Besides causing one to wonder whether Harper has, in fact, been napping for much of the time that he's been on Parliament Hill, the comment is instructive for a number of reasons.

First of all, how is it that Stephen Harper can say that “this is not how Parliament should work” when he had already negotiated his own deal with the Liberals as his price for endorsing the government's Throne Speech? Apparently, Parliament should work differently in the fall when he's the one extracting conditions from the government than it does in the spring when the NDP is holding the cards. Or, to put it another way, Parliament should work differently when he wants an election than when he doesn't.

This seems to be in line with how many right-wing thinkers operate...

When the advantage is for me then it is fine...

When the advantage is for anyone else then it is wrong and disgraceful and prejudice...

But I'm accepting that we can spend the next 12 or 16 years cleaning up after a Harper government. It will give us something to do instead of cleaning up the environment, creating affordable housing or universal childcare.Harper's definition of disgraceful?

Sorry to disagree with your rose-colored view of the liberals, but just looked over my total taxes this year (along with my health care premium and I still can't get a family doctor in Ontario) and I nearly shit myself.

It is all well and good to assist lessor nations with foreign aid money, that most times ends up in the hands of corrupt governments rather than the people who need it (sounds familiar!). But why does the left wing types have a problem with a little tax relief for the middle class? Do you enjoy pissing your money away? Does inept government, lying, and stealing (yes ultimately what the liberals did was theft/money laundering) not make you angry?

The libranos have more than wore out there welcome, it's time for a change!

Liberals, by definition, are people who can't decide how to spend your money.

In the USA we have the worst-of-the-worst in the Hollywood liberals who advocate taxes up the wazoo on the midle class while they go out of their way to shelter their assets from the taxman.

The Kennedys are even worse as they get most of their income from import rights on Scotch and other liquors and ol' Teddy boy got those particular incomes exempted from the 55% capital gains tax rate everyone else gets nailed with for unearned income such as royalties and dividends.

Hypocrites.

Wow, I didn't know doctors were that hard to find. But if your bladder problem is that bad I'm guessing you'd better find one quick.

Middle class tax relief...I'm all for it, but I don't consider multi-million dollar companies "Middle class"....

Pissing...I enjoy a good piss after I've had a few Corona, however I don't consider child care, affordable housing and the environment to be a waste of money.

Stealing...hang those Mo-Fo's!! I'm not a Liberal supporter, however I do like the current situation when the NDP get to pull some strings and steer us left.

And I think despite our current government and despite the fact that we may have to suffer because of the Lib's we live in a pretty damn good country. I looked at my taxes a while ago and I can’t believe how cheep it is to live in the best country in the world.

Personally, I just don't trust Harper. His head would be so far up Bush's ass if he was elected PM, that Canada would become the US's parking Lot faster then Brittany Spear's gets married/divorced/married/etc...

At least Paul Martin is demonstrating some back bone against the US, much to my own surprise.

As terrible as the sponsorship scandal is/was, changing Governments right now would be far more damaging to Canada. I mean, really when you compare our Gov'ts to that of Blair and Bush - do we really have it THAT badly??

And Donny_Brasco - I have to agree, Corona is Pisswater - Try Alexander Keiths instead....

You're speaking of Americans as if they were the enemy... when they are actually our best international allies. Harper recognizes this fact, and does not believe in calling them "morons" and "bastards"... unlike the Lib's. I don't know about you, but being friends with someone does not mean I would put my head up their poop-chute... but whatever turns you on (I wouldn't want to be your friend though).

And Paul Martin is not "demonstrating some back bone against the US", the US is ignoring us because of the insulting record of the ruling party. Is the border open to our beef yet? How about softwood lumber tarrifs being lowered? Back bone...? Yeah, right.

Changing government is exactly what our country needs. The Lib's need to be sent to a corner to think about what they've done, and clean up their party. They should not be running our country when doing so.

Ya, but I think there a few guys in Harper's party who would pimp out their own moms if it meant a few more bucks for them.

I want leadership that cares about Canada and the people in Canada, not just Business and $$$$.

Compromise within a minority government is not the issue. The disgraceful part is that the Liberals are desperatly trying to buy a few months more in power with Taxpayers money. If you don't understand something so basically un-democratic (and insulting to all taxpayers), then I just don't know what more to say.

You have things backwards. The Liberals are the ones who have been caught with their hands in the till, not the Conservatives.

Rather than stealing from us, I think the Conservatives would just sell us out to America (to a further extent than we already have been) and send us down the road to theocracy. No thanks.

Right, I agree. I'm not a Liberal supporter, but at least our boarder still exists and we are not "deeply integrated" with the Yanks.

I'm not for sale and neither is the rest of Canada.

Tell Harper that on election day and vote for anyone but him and his party. Unless your in the top 5% of the food chain in Canada and make $200+ K a year a vote for the Conservatives will mean you pay more and the rich and the corporations pay less.
