Someone in the complex I live in listed their place on airbnb for $149/night but the problem is short-term rentals aren't technically allowed here (strata rule) but I believe there was an allowance made because of, you know, a likely kickback made to the previous property manager and maybe the council as well. That's $4500/month FFS, which is a hell of a lot more than they'd get renting it on an annual lease.

I totally agree that renters can be a PITA. The biggest problem creators here, since I've lived here anyway, have been renters and that dumbfuck in my hall still hasn't been evicted despite the amount of vandalism he's caused when his mental health issues get the better of him.

When a friend of mine sold her house after split with ex she opted to rent and used me as a reference and wow, but the questions her landlord asked me about her! It was ridiculous but I get their apprehension although with her there was no reason to have concerns.

UBI is inevitable at this point. Government policy is just too slow to address the seismic change on a social level that is coming from mass unemployment and an anemic social safety net for the disabled and elderly.

The next wave of AI and automation will purge the low skill job market. We still need skilled labour so closing the doors to immigrants is cutting for your nose to spit your face but we need pre-fab houses rolled out en mass for decades to catch up to the huge gap in the housing market that was created by the boomer generation policies. Thanks HARPER! The Grits are just as responsible but at least under Martin they didn't let inflation spiral. JT is getting hit on all sides but is not the catalyst of the current dilemma as much as PP wants to will it into being. It has been and always has been the decades of neglect domestically.

Not when everyone refuses to see what it is, a single benefit instead of dozens of bureaucracies. Conservatives insist in believing it's another added on new benefit.

So they build 10,000 new subsidized home in your town and sell them for $200K each.
You already own one valued at $1.5 million worse you just got it a couple years ago and still owe 1.3 million on your mortgage.
Are you going to run out and vote to build those 10,000 new homes?
Just sayin'... from the other side of the argument.

Like Scape, I think it is. Business has convinced us that minimum wage is meant for peoples' first jobs, but the original intent was what I describe above. So one man could earn enough to support a wife, kid, and home. So business isn't willing to pay that amount any longer. So we have to havw a basic income, and tax commerce to pay for it.

The trend of companies making more and more every quarter, at the cost to society and the environment will end when one of them finally collapses. Might as well end it before then.

Homes for 1.5 million is absurd. As home prices rose to insane amounts, the homeless crisis has as well. Someone has to be left holding the bag. Might as well rip that bandaid off. A finite resource cannot expand forever.

UBI would make up for the leaky sieve of a social safety net we have now and make it egalitarian regardless of status while streamlining the bureaucracy. It's a win win and at this point do we have another choice?
