Nope, that would have to be Geddy Lee. Always sad to see a band with good musicianship spoil it with a crappy singer.

I'm of the school that hitting 15 octaves is less important
than a unique, all-his-own sound in a singer...

and you can't beat the energy and presence of Rose in his prime,
and still today...

[B-o]

i'll take an Axl over 100 tinny-voiced cherubic dorks any day...

yes... that was his sound and backed by the guitars and drums of GNR...
it was amazing...

try and sell depressive Kurt Cobain mumble-yarling to a record label...

try and sell marble-mouthed Eddie Vedder...

Axl is Axl. rock god... [B-o] XD

they all are... unique is not the standard, but it works

Axl was awesome and it genuinely sucked that he went nuts, screwed the boys over, and let that Hollywood freakshow lifestyle ruin something that was terrific.

"You will be my-eee-ine". Fail.
"Knockin' on Heaven's Doh-oh-or". Fail.

GnR's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" is truly painful and would be the worst cover in history if not for their butchery of "Live and Let Die" which is even brutaler (yeah, I just made up that word).

Axl sings like Ethyl Merman with her tit in the wringer. Can't wait to hear some of his AC/DC renditions:

"Back in Blah-eee-ack"
"I'm on the Highway to He-eeee-ell"

He also fuckified Don Henley's "I Will Not Go Quietly". That voice comes on the radio and the channel's gotta get changed. Kryptonite. I can't have that shit in the room with me.

So fuck off, Axl. Just go eat.

Cover versions of all sorts generally suck. I agree though that the GNR ones weren't very good because, except for songs like Patience, a young Axl didn't exactly go for subtlety. When I Don't Have You worked because he was smart enough to tone it down a lot, which he didn't do with Live And Let Die. Same with any ACDC he does because if he pushes too hard and goes to scream-o level it won't work because those lyrics were meant for a lower gruffer voice like Brian Johnson has.

At his full power though, with their own songs?

'i just found a million dollars that someone forgot, it's days like this that push me over the brink'
'everything came up roses when we held on to our guns'
'i like to think our love was a tad more, it may sound funny but you'd think by now i'd be smiling'
'i know that you can love me when there's no one left to blame'
'and the streets don't change but maybe the names, i ain't got time for the game'
'i'm a west coast struttin' one bad mother, got a rattlesnake suitcase under my arm'

Next to Motley Crue, GNR was the only other band to come out of that 1980's LA scene that was worth a damn; Van Halen was somewhat different because they'd hit it big before it became all that crap heavy-makeup wussy-metal that those nightclubs were churning out. And GNR was the last really huge band before the 90's hit and changed everything with grunge. I put them, at least, on my own personal top-10 of rock bands. For awhile there was nothing like them.
