Zipperfish Zipperfish:
Four-plus games is a bit much, especially considering two are playoff games. You gotta wonder at the consistency of the NHL, considering the Chara hit was less than a game, even though it sparked a police investigation.

That's because everybody hates the Canucks. :P

Should have been an interference call. That's it. Watch the video again, the elbow did not move up until after the hit. Torres WAS visable to Eberle, the check was actually to the front of Eberle. Only got Eberle's face because he was reaching, no intent on Torres' part.

On second thought, Torres stands by hit

$1:
Asked before the decision how he'd react if he was suspended for a playoff game, Raffi Torres said:

"That would be tough to swallow, I wouldn't be too happy about that," Torres said. "After looking at it more, he puts his hand up at the last second. He knows I'm coming. He was out there for a pretty long shift and he's reaching for pucks.

"He has to know that there are guys out there who are going to finish their hits. That's a good play for us.

"What I'm doing is trying to finish my hit. After seeing it, I think he knows I'm out there.

"It's a good clean hit. I have had nothing but positive feedback from everyone who has talked to me. They are people who if they thought it was dirty would have told me."

Torres had full support of the Canucks, including GM Mike Gillis who called the hit a "hockey play."

Heading into the hearing, Torres had hoped his history would have been a factor.

"I've never been suspended before," he said. "I feel like I'm a clean hitter out there."

Torres said the hearing was "quick" and straightforward.

"About 10 minutes," he said.

He was asked what he thought about the hit and he's made it clear again he thought it was clean.

"There's a lot worse hits out there than that one," Torres said. "It's unbelievable (people think I targeted his head).

"My elbow as down, I hit him with my bicep. He's reaching. He sees me. These are hits I grew up loving to do.

"It would have been easy to get the elbow up and he probably wouldn't be back for the rest of the year."

Nah. This is exactly the sort of hit the NHL's going to crack down on for the foreseeable future. Torres might not be too bright if he thought that he'd get away with that one with no suspension. If Eberle had been hurt Torres probably would have got the same suspension as that douche Cook did.

This is exactly like the Chara hit. It's a penalty for interfence because he didn't have the puck. Because there was an injury on the play, by rule, the interference penalty must be a major. That's the rules. In minor hockey, all major penalties mean a suspension, so in my mind, the major and the game misconduct warrant a short suspension. Two games. But this was not a dirty hit, same as Chara's. It was a violation of the rules (interference) but the injury was more a fluke of the contact than any intent to injure. So, not a clean hit, but not a dirty hit either. I call this a major penalty only by result of the injury, not the hit itself.

Lemmy, would you please enlighten me and explain exactly what injuries Eberle suffered. For the life of me I just can't seem to find the information you're using for your reasoning.

My mistake, Hyack. I didn't notice Eberle getting right back up. I thought he was laid out and down. I, therefore, change my interpretation. It should have been a 2 minute minor for interference, no suspension. As I said before, not a clean hit, but not a dirty one.

bootlegga bootlegga:
Hmm...elbow to the back of the head of a player who hasn't touched the puck.

Not sure if you're watching the same video as everyone else here. The check was clearly to the front of Eberle and Eberle clearly saw Torres from that angle. Watch from the :45 point of the video... the replay shows that Torres bicep/shoulder made contact, no elbow.

Obviously, by my pic, I'm not a biased Canucks fan.

Okay, maybe it's more on the side of the head than the back, but the key is that it's "elbow to the the head".

I'm not a fan of any NHL team in particular, so I don't have a bias either. Just because I live in Edmonton, it doesn't automatically make me an Oiler fan, which is what I assume you're implying with your last sentence.

If Torres deserved 4 games for that one, why didn't Clifford get any games for this one?

The Canucks lost the game as a result of the five minute major for this one.
