Unfortunately, Trump is blamed for deaths because he exasperated the situation by down playing it's seriousness. He equated it with the Flu, and suggested injecting yourself with disinfectant.

Ford will be remembered for the same. Really based on the ineptitude of Kenney, Ford and O'Toole, this will be the death knell for the Conservative movement in Canada in it's current form.

Trudeau's response has not been perfect, but at least he believed the situation serious. My only problem with him was he said people "speak moistly". I hate the word "moist".

It's the right that can't seem to tell the difference between active hostility and simple ineptitude.

The thread is about Ford but the first comment shits on Trudeau and "kinda" defends Trump.

Now I don't mind the shitting on Trudeau part but don't compare him to Trump.

Trudeau is certainly at fault for not restoring pandemic preparedness that his predecessors eliminated and not acting fast enough to get domestic vaccine production going.

However, most of the carnage from COVID-19 has been due to the incompetence of premiers in this country, the majority of whom are conservative.

There’s lots of blame to go round. Collectively, we could have done a better job following directives on masks, social distancing and foreign travel. Nursing home regulations were inadequate. The borders should have been closed earlier and more firmly. Federal governments have dropped the ball on domestic vaccine manufacture since Mulroney’s time. Given the dire situation, you’d think they’d be willing to throw any money requested at Canadian outfits like this:

$1:
The head of a Calgary-based company in the midst of clinical trials for a COVID-19 vaccine made another pitch for federal funding Monday.

Brad Sorenson, the CEO of Providence Therapeutics, addressed the House of Commons standing committee on international trade. He's made repeated pitches to Ottawa for financial support related to manufacturing, so far without any success.

The company is soon entering its second phase of clinical trials on its messenger RNA-based vaccine.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/ ... -1.5994187

$1:
"Everything we need to start producing mRNA vaccines in Canada is in place. The only thing that's missing is the capital," said Sorenson.

He says if he doesn't get the upfront costs from Canada, where he would prefer, he will get them from other countries.

Sorenson sees that as a a problem as he will have committed that production to another country and will have to export if out of Canada when the country needs it.

In fairness, they were given money for trials already, but not for manufacturing.

I posted that in the covid thread but this is certainly on target for what Doug has done and why he needs to step down.

It does however, overlook on fact in that he hired the 'Big Cod' Rick Hillier who, in the midst of planning the covid response, decided to take on an arms contract. He was supposed to stay on after April and keep leading the task force but when he stepped on his dick like that in public no one would take his orders seriously anymore.

How do you know you're bad?

When you're considered to be a disaster by the same people who just lived through a Trump presidency.

This Pandemic could be a sea change for Canadian politics. I could see the Conservatives relegated to sideline status for a very long time.

The premiers that rushed to re-open in order to "save businesses" also refused to do a couple of simple steps that would have salvaged many more businesses from going under, because it goes against the completely bogus "free market" ideology they worship like slavish dogs. One, they could have put a moratorium for the duration of the epidemic on commercial evictions. Two, they could have provided direct partial payments of commercial rents to landlords, and then given tenants a five-year interest/penalty-free period to catch up on the remaining outstanding rent. Three, they (and the feds) could have extended the period that landlords can claim losses against their tax payments from three (?) years to five. And that's just the beginning of what could have been done to help businesses stay afloat. And they chose to do nothing like that because it would have been "socialist" and been too much government "interference" in the economic system.

I'll say that I still don't like Trudeau's government all that much - I haven't forgotten the scandals they engaged in both prior and during COVID. That being said I have to admit that I'm glad it was a Liberal government in power during COVID because I can only imagine how much worse it all would have been if the feds were run by a colossally inept failure and goof-off like Andrew Scheer and his Conservatives. It would have been a national disaster that the country would never have recovered from, and would have probably resulted in the Tories being wiped out worse in the next election than they were in 1993.

That would be a huge change in the wrong direction. The last thing Canada needs would be the Liberals staying in power for an extended period of time.

Conservative parties as a whole will take a hit, but they will never die. If anything, a return to grassroots Conservatism will be what's needed.
