This is bullshit, not only was the British Government in charge of Canada at the time. They British Government was in there right. It was there country or there colony at least and they could damn well turn away anybody they pleased.
We should pay them $143 mil because there ancestors made the mistake of trying to immigrate to a country without actually getting a clearance to immigrate there? Being us Canadians, we should have just automaticly let in any immigrant just because they say so?
Well india, I hope you are looking at this because what I have to say to you is.... fuck off. As for the deaths, they were there for two months. Took military naval ships to finally run them off. Perhaps if they took the intitial fuck off in the first place, Britain wouldn't have had to send naval ships to run them off and nobody would have died. Simple as that.

How do you say Fuck Off in Hindi? But I'm sure Harper will think it's a good idea. What the heck, it's only money. What's 143 million to the billion plus he just dropped trying to impress us what a worldmeister he is.

This was a problem with British colonial policy.
Basically, English colonists could go anywhere within the British Empire. A Londoner could settle in Kenya if he wished. He would even be granted small piece of land granted he had a trade.
A native Kenyan did not have these privileges, even with the necessary skills. In fact, a native Kenyan could be forced off his land without settlement to make way for 'more civilized humans'.
There were many historical attempts whereby non white English subjects tried moving within the Empire, but were severely restricted, often with violence. Australia, Canada and British Isles were off limits to all non white settlers.
Australia and Canada had strong policies in place that dealt with the issue of non English, non white immigration. They were (co-incidentally) removed with the dissolution of the British Empire.
Again, this is not Canada's fault per say, it was a structural problem within the British Empire. The Empire was discriminatory in nature. There was very powerful cast system built into it. The rights and privileges granted to the Empire's subjects, varied from race to race.
All bad policies have blowback. The British Empire effectively fell apart when the UK ran out of manpower after WW2 to hold on to people who saw the British for what they were. That’s when the fun started.
But coming back to the issue of settlement for the refugees, the Indians should take it up with the British government. Judging by how broke Britain is, I doubt they would get anything.

$1: But Hugh Johnston, professor emeritus of history at Simon Fraser University, said there was no such thing as an “entry tax” levied on Komagata Maru passengers.
“It’s mistaken information,” he said, noting that the passengers were required to pay for the chartered vessel in $15,000 instalments, and one of them came due when the ship arrived in Vancouver. They are asking for millions based on an entry tax that was never paid. Tax fraud... tsk, tsk.

The Indian government wants money because of a domestic policy that didn't actually affect the Indian government at all. What a bunch of fucktards. Can I send the reply when the request comes in?

I'm sorry, who forced them to pay the alleged (which is suspect to begin with)"entry tax" and how exactly did they arrive at the $143 Million figure?
You get an apology - that's it.
F*ck off, India and get some historical perspective you morons.

$1: Last year, Prime Minister Stephen Harper offered an apology to the Sikh community during a festival in Surrey, B.C. — a move criticized by some as insufficient — along with $2.5 million in federal funding for projects commemorating the tragedy.
In April, federal NDP leader Jack Layton filed a petition in Parliament calling for an official apology from the Harper government.
For its part, the province of B.C. issued an official apology for the discriminatory policy in the legislature in 2008. Once you start apologizing for something, they will always come for more. In this case, $143M...

Mustang1 Mustang1: ... how exactly did they arrive at the $143 Million figure?
Let me see... 376 x $15,000 + compensation for the families of killed people + compensation for families who lost everything + compensation for mental damage x interest over interest over interest over 96 years... And I am sure I forgot some things I think $143M is a low number
