I don't think they can do that. Legal tender is legal tender.

Means shit. I pulled my company account from the Royal because they started charging 2.75% to "handle" cash years ago. That's what a bank's job fucking IS, always has been.
Maybe some store in an Idaho militia border town will refuse Canadian Viola Desmond tens next.

Isn't this the same thing as the "gay cake" conundrum?

He's not refusing to serve people with a McDonald $10, he's saying the McDonald $10 isn't legal tender in his store.

But what about stores that won't give you change for a $100 bill, even if you want to buy something.

Note: I just feel like arguing today. :D

DrCaleb DrCaleb:

The article quoted a law professor who said he technically can do that:

$1:

Wayne MacKay, a retired law professor at Dalhousie University in Halifax, said he's never heard of a business rejecting money because of the image on the note, but that doesn't mean they're not allowed to do so.

"In my understanding, it's legal for someone to say that they won't accept a certain kind of currency even though it is legal tender," he said.

For an example, MacKay said many businesses stopped accepting cash during the pandemic to keep workers from having to handle money, while others are now accepting forms of digital currency.

The guy also stated that he won't be requiring his staff to enforce the rule. It seems to be a strictly personal thing for him, in that he won't accept the bills when he himself is working the register.

And the plan was, at least for a while, to not remove Macdonald from our currency altogether but just to move him to the $100 bill, although I couldn't see anything more recent when I Googled it. I actually don't mind this at all-Desmond deserves her recognition, while Borden was a generally awful Prime Minister who was likely only on the hundred dollar bill because World War I was such a massive event in Canadian history.

They can't. Legal tender means legal tender, across the country.

Remembering trips to the USA if they noticed you were Canadian, they'd give you $2 bills in your change.
Then it was up to you to find any store that would take them. Most wouldn't.
$1:
They can't. Legal tender means legal tender, across the country.

You mean the bank that has Royal in its name can't declare that $1 is only worth 97.25 cents?
Oh wait, they're a BANK, they own the gov't. They can call the cops and accuse fraud simply because you're native and it's the cops who get in shit.....

As Jared points out from the article, they can. Same as a business may refuse old paper money because of the frequency of counter fitting, they can say they don't want the McDonald $10.

I did some checking, and it's chartered banks that can't refuse legal tender. There are even still a few that will take raw gold on deposit.

That's bending it a bit, and I personally believe any business owner that refuses bills because of who is on them is taking things too far, and it will only hurt their business in the long run.

Look at all he businesses here in town that started to refuse cash outright when the pandemic started, only to reverse that later on because it was costing them business. Whether or not you tap or use cards, everyone has a cupholder full of change, or a few bucks in their wallets.

Said business owner from the article needs to suck it up and maybe try to be part of the solution instead of just another problem. Unity will take both sides, and episodes like this will erode any sympathy said owner might have had.
