Earlier in this thread I made a post stating that what had happened at the residential schools was indeed tragic, but there is still a lot wrong with how indigenous people are treated today. I just finished reading this article where my Governor has signed a bill banning racially offensive mascots, logos, and names. The new law could affect up to 20 schools in my county alone. No problems there. What caught my eye was the other provision of the law: the end of sundown sirens. Growing up in the south I had always heard that there were towns that told blacks to never let the sun go down on them in city limits during segregation. I always thought that it was an urban myth. Well not only was it not a myth, apparently it is still going on today for Native Americans in the state that I am currently living in. Certain towns are still blaring sirens before sundown as a reminder to non whites to get out of town before sundown. In 2021?

I'm not sure where I stand on that, mainly because cancel culture is responsible for several teams losing their names in an unjust way. The one that bothers me the most is the Edmonton Eskimos, who had bent over backwards for the Inuit countless times to make sure they weren't bothered.

They had (the team) even done a study that found something like 90% (or more) of the Inuit didn't find it offensive at all. The Esks never had an Inuit or igloo or anything like that as a logo, using only the familiar 'EE' we all know. To suddenly capitulate because a lot of people these days (especially the younger generations with no grasp of anything) became offended all of a sudden isn't the way to do things.

It seems that we are throwing tradition into the garbage in this day and age just to make a few malcontents happy. Sometimes a sports team name is just a sports team name. Everyone needs to get over it and suck it up.

Yes, I'm hardline when it comes to sports.

We won’t forget!! We grew up on stories that we didn’t really understand till years later. There’s lots of things that will never be forgotten. Agreements being changed after the fact. Children being taken away because the parents are native. Forced moves. There are a lot of disturbing stories. Indian agents changing the will so the family got nothing. I know the ones I have been told over the years will not be forgotten. I have told my children and someday will tell my grandson.
