Apparently the clown who designed the sub is raging on social media because the US government isn't constantly in contact with him during the crisis, with the usual "why isn't the government doing something?!?!?!?!?". And several years ago he was also on social media raging about how "excssive" & "heavy-handed" government-required safety standards & design regulations were the bane of his profit-driven business model. Once again, anyone who reads & believes what Ayn Rand wrote shouldn't be legally allowed to build anything more complicated than a Lego set because with that kind of think all they're ensuring is that someday someone who steps into one of their contraptions is going to die.

Personally I blame Star Trek for all the negativity towards the libertarian spirit behind the sub company, given that Star Trek convinced far too many of us that exploration is best done by people who actually know what they're doing and who aren't primarily motivated by making as much money off the gig as they possibly can.

Even though the writers strike is still on I'm sure there is someone somewhere already writing the script for the movie that is bound to be made about this. The scale of the operation to locate this sub is unreal and makes me wonder what this is costing and who's going to pay those bills?

Great idea - one spec script coming up!

Sadly, it's us taxpayers that are on the hook for search and rescue missions.

On a side note, it's only going to be a matter of time before Canada gets hit with a massive bill for SAR in the Arctic when one of the 50 or so cruise ships up there each year grounds itself or sinks after hitting a chunk of ice.

herbie herbie:
SUBMERSIBLE - requires a mothership and is either tethered to it or autonomous and can travel very short distances
WHICH IS IT?
If it's the latter
- why this big search? It should be close to mothership
- How in hell can a commercial operation not have the proper equipment on the surface vessel to locate, ensure communication & perform some rescues?

Because ocean currents. It's not tethered to anything. It can't really go forward or back fast enough to fight current, just up and down. Get below the Atlantic gyre, and all is well.

And they don't have radio equipment to contact the surface for the same reason they don't have a transparent front that can withstand 4km of ocean pressure - the owner is a cheap bastard who needs another $10,000 instead of his own life. Sold himself the rope to hang him with.

And it's really hard to communicate from that kind of depth. Even military subs use deployable comms buoys to communicate with the surface.

They can't take those depths either. They usually come up nearer the surface to use a comm buoy.
Nobody makes 3km lighweiht cables ot tethers.

I'm also wondering why it's so difficult to locate - how do they find metal deposits etc? What about the US undersea listening array?

They mentioned on CNN (I think) earlier today that the sub could be bobbing around on the surface but being that it's white it could be difficult to see with the waves washing over it.

There is apparently a crane that can reach. in St. John's. Just no ship to mount it on.

That would be the worst. To have made it to the surface but doomed to die lost bobbing in the waves.

Less than 6 hours of oxygen left at the time of my post. If there was time for a miracle, it's now.

That said, this is now a recovery effort, sadly. One man's hubris has doomed 5 people to a pretty horrible death.

This is why you don't skirt regulations when it comes to oceangoing vessels. Mother nature is a "Fuck around and find out" entity. Mr. Rush has fucked around, and now he's finding out.
