The reasons behind the assumption that Canadians are american are, at least in this area of the world.

1) geographically here in Sweden, N.America is lumped into one continent ... hence Amerika ... same when you lump Scandinavia!

2) Sweden is one of the highest Europian country in Literacy of english. Children are being taught english as a second language. a fair amount of bussiness is done in english, adverts, newsprint or commercials are appearing more & more today with english ... infact there is a sub-lingo evolving here ... sweglish

3) TV is not dubbed here we have sub-titles ... therefore all english programming is seen by the general public. This of course allows the average Joe to assume I'm from the States.

Yesterday when I was at my local flower shop & I had commented (in Swedish) "Dang I started to write in english" ... the gal asked what country I was from? I said to her "guess" ... USA? UK? ... then came Canada.

On a personal note: My 2 kids & I were once confronted by a few "anti-Bush anti-american" male youths 8O on the assumption they heard me speaking to my children. I was able to defuse them quite fast (remember I live in the land of Hans Blixt) but still, it's a shame that people associate a population/country with the current government.

I am very careful where & when I talk out loud in public with my kids ... :!:

Blue Nose's By-Line Reads:

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

That's a clever line.

Seriously.

I wish I'd thought of it.

So I'd say something about it being a Yogi Berra Quotation, and then MissT would make a crack about Yogi Bear... then twister would give the history of Yogi Berra, or something.

After that, Arctic Menace would tell some "funny" story about British accents, and EyeBrock would correct him/make fun of him in that there's no such thing as a "British accent". Arctic Menace would stick to his story, and attempt to validate himself by posting everything he knows about the UK.

I'd post something about being able to place a person to a street in London by their accent (brogue), and Eyebrock will think I'm serious. I'll let him know that the line was from My Fair Lady, and that his post just reminded me of it.

I think that's about it....

Damn Straight! He said I didn't know ant=ything, but I do know somethings. Plus, that was latino way of making a point, forgive the pun.

(point=knife. Latino's are knife-wielding maniacs. I should know, as I am one)

The funnest part is actually explaining the difference between Canadians and Americans. I used to get so pissed off with Greeks because I'd tell them I'm Canadian and they just keep calling me American.
Then I thought of a killer, when they ask what the difference is between the two I simply say "Canada is Greece and America is Turkey". They shut up immediately, and the best part is if they make the mistake again I turn around and call them a Turk. Works every time.

DISCLAIMER: I have nothing against the country of Turkey or the people who live there. I only use it to get the point across, because lets be honest, most pureblood Greeks are racist, xenophobic idiots. And I am part Greek so I know what I'm talking about.

world map showing the import empires. the different colours represent which area's are important in the modern worlds. everything in grey is fluid.

this is the map every moderately intelligent person knows. further details are reserved for people bothed to learn the nuances.

US, EU, Russia, PRC, and India. that;'s all you really need to know.
