$1:
After a motorist got ticketed for smoking in a vehicle with a child inside, Prince Albert,Sask. police are reminding the public that they continue to enforce the Tobacco Control Act.

"Smoking, or holding a lighted tobacco product in a vehicle with another person who's under the age of 16 years in that vehicle, is illegal," Sgt. Travis Willie said. "You can be pulled over based on that and issued a ticket."

The law's been around for years, but Willie says people are sometimes surprised when they find out they're going to be charged. There tends to be more awareness, for example, about the ban on driving while using a cellphone, he said.

The fine under the Tobacco Control Act is $280.

Recently, Prince Albert police and Saskatchewan Government Insurance teamed up for a two-day focus on traffic offences.

It resulted in 35 charges, including eight for cellphone use, two disqualified driving offences, one impaired driving charge, and the one Tobacco Control Act charge.

Traffic police have considerable discretion in laying tobacco-related charges, Willie said.

"Along with enforcement, education is just as important," he said.

I thought the title said "tickled" and thought to myself "finally an effective disincentive!"

I loved this law when I heard it. Both my parents smoked, and I recall being about 4 and having to ask if they would crack the window a bit because I couldn't breathe. At 40 below on the highway, the cold was better than the smoke.

Yeah, I remember being called a drama queen while the backseat became an impromptu gas chamber

...okay maybe I was sorta dramatic after all

But still

For all the oppression smokers think they suffer nowadays, I'm thrilled this law has almost universal respect

I love this idea. If I had my way... cigarettes would be banned everywhere ;)

Yeah I know it's the law, officer. That's why the baby's in the carseat on the snowbank while I have a smoke in the car with the heater on.

That's what Timmies is for. You kids go have a piss and pick a seat, Gramps will be in after a couple few minutes... big deal. Adds a few minutes travel time, in exchange for more donuts. Mmmmm donuts......
