With quite a few of the Canucks showing up at UBC prior to training camp, and a lot of stories starting to show in the news I guess it's about time to get this thread on the road again. Team RosterGame ScheduleCanucks announce coaching staff changes$1: Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks President & General Manager Mike Gillis announced the signing of Assistant Coach, Newell Brown and the re-signing of Associate Coach Rick Bowness and Assistant Coach, Video, Darryl Williams. Goaltending Coach, Roland Melanson joined the Canucks on June 22, 2010. As a result of these announcements, it has been determined that Ryan Walter will leave the organization.
Rick Bowness returns for his fifth season as a member of the Canucks coaching staff and 21st NHL season in a coaching capacity. Bowness has held the position of Head Coach with five teams over his NHL coaching career and spent seven seasons in the League as a player with Atlanta, Detroit, St. Louis and Winnipeg.
Darryl Williams returns for his third season with the Canucks in the capacity of Assistant Coach, Video. Williams played 11 seasons in the AHL and IHL and is the first Newfoundland-native to work in an NHL coaching position in League history.
Brown, 48, joins the Canucks coaching staff after spending the past five seasons as Assistant Coach with the Anaheim Ducks. He has also worked as Assistant Coach for the Columbus Blue Jackets and Chicago Blackhawks over a 13-year NHL coaching career. Prior to joining the NHL ranks, Brown spent four seasons as Head Coach of the Adirondack Red Wings, Detroit’s AHL affiliate. He also served as Head Coach of Michigan University from 1990-92 and was an Assistant at Michigan State from 1986-90.
“Newell brings a tremendous amount of NHL experience and success to our team as an Assistant Coach, including a Stanley Cup Championship”, said Mike Gillis. “We believe his skill set complements our coaching staff and will help further develop our players; ultimately making this team more competitive.”
Brown’s playing career included two seasons with the Cornwall Royals, where he helped the Royals win the Memorial Cup in 1979. Drafted by Vancouver 158th overall in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft, Brown spent one year in the Canucks organization playing for Fredericton (AHL) and Muskegon (IHL) before captaining the Canadian National Team in 1985-86.

Luongo brushes off captaincy rumours $1: Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo brushed off rumours that the team is considering giving his captaincy to star forward Henrik Sedin.
When asked by Sportsnet’s Dan Murphy whether he had heard of any discussions about a change to the team’s captaincy, Luongo responded via text: “Nope, not that I know of.”
The internet was buzzing Tuesday with rumours that the team was going to make a change of captains. A number of bloggers published the speculation as fact on their Twitter accounts, and there was also a blog in the Vancouver Sun Monday about Luongo possibly relinquishing the captaincy.
Luongo was named captain of the team prior to the 2008-09 season, the first goaltender to have the honour since Montreal Canadiens‘ Bill Durnam in 1947-48. National Hockey League rules prohibit a goalie from wearing the “C”, though one can be designated with the title.
Luongo’s captaincy became a storyline in this past season’s playoffs as his play struggled at times. Some commentators felt the title put a goalie in a difficult position of having to criticize teammates.
Sedin was the Canucks’ best player this past season, winning the Art Ross Trophy as scoring champion and the Hart Trophy as the league’s most valuable player.

Brendon Morrison to attend Canucks training camp$1: Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks President & General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that centre Brendan Morrison will attend the Canucks Main Training Camp in Penticton, BC, on a Professional Tryout (PTO).
Morrison, 35, played 74 games last season with the Washington Capitals, recording 42 points (12-30-42) and 40 penalty minutes. In 829 career NHL regular season games, Morrison has scored 187 goals, while adding 360 assists (187-360-547) and 424 penalty minutes.
The native of Pitt Meadows, BC, has played for five teams during his NHL career including the Canucks from 1999.00–2007.08. In 543 games in a Canucks uniform, Morrison recorded 393 points (136-257-393) and ranks 11th in all-time franchise scoring.
Some good news from the Canucks' camp, I've always been a fan of Morrison, also spent some time with him in physio....

Canucks @ Flames
Canucks 2010 training camp began and ended in a blink and just like that, the players lace up their skates to hit the ice for the first pre-season game of the 2010-11 season.
In a bit of twist this year, the Canucks will dress two squads to play against two Calgary Flames teams - one at home and one in Calgary.
A lot of eyes are focused in on former Canucks Brendan Morrison and Peter Schaefer, both on professional tryouts as they joined the Canucks training camp in Penticton. Both are hoping they can carve out a role for themselves to fill in the holes on the Vancouver roster.

$1: The Canucks dropped a 3-1 decision to the Calgary Flames at Rogers Arena Tuesday night and earlier in the evening Vancouver lost to the Flames 3-2 in Calgary as both teams dressed two squads on the night.
Losing to Calgary is bad enough, but to lose to them twice in the same day is nearly unbearable. Not a good start to the preseason, but it is good to see Morrison in a Canucks uniform again.

Vancouver vs Edmonton
The Canucks opened the preseason with two losses against the Calgary Flames Tuesday night but have a chance to get right back at it as they host the Edmonton Oilers tonight.
In preseason meetings between the Canucks and Oilers in the last three years, the Canucks have had the advantage, winning five of six games between the two teams and outscoring Edmonton 23-17.
Noticeably missing from both lineups was Roberto Luongo, who will get to play in part of tonight's matchup against the Oilers. Head coach Alain Vigneault is adamant that in the early part of the preseason, no goalie will play a full game so expect Luongo to split the game with one of the other four net-minders in the queue.
7pm PT on Canucks.com and Rogers Sportsnet One.
