A brutal check by Zdeno Chara on Max Pacioretty during the Boston Bruins at Montreal Canadiens game on Mar 8, 2011.

That was brutal, I hope they suspend Chara, this isn't his first dirty hit.

Chara has always played dirty, his whole career.

You can see the extra little shot he gives right at the end to push Pacioretty
into the glass. Even the idiot Boston homer announcer had to withdraw his
'wasn't intentional' BS.

And you guys wonder why Boston and Montreal hate each other so much.

The League should do something, probably won't.

I think the 90 degree corners of the glass like that need to be eliminated. At least make it a 45 degree angle 2-3 feet deep so that if a player his it, they are deflected back towards the ice instead of outright stopping and getting a concussion/busted neck.

Pacioretty has suffered a severe concussion and a non-displaced fractured fourth cervical vertebrae in his neck after being hit into a glass partition between the benches by Charro.

Pacioretty did not have the puck and Charro could pulled away but didn't, then gives another shove at the end. ASSHAT!

I don't like the ruling.
But I think that Chara will pay a lot more in the court of public oppinion.
I just don't know how they didn't at least fine him.

I think more should be done with the glass frame. There is no real padding on any of them and the padding looks more like its to stop getting cut. He's not the first player to be hit into them either.

Oh, I think Chara got off lightly on this one. I don't agree with the NHL on this one.

The refs got the call absolutely correct: 5 + a game for interference. Any 5 + GM penalty SHOULD be an automatic suspension, as it is in minor hockey.

This is playing over and over here in the news. Damn it's disgusting.

You can see his head rebound on the glass frame... They need to do something about that frame.

I was listening at the radio from a defenceman. He said they ALWAYS know where they are on the ice rink. They know there is a frame there. Chara is not a newbie. He knows it was there.

Damn.

I don't know about this call. You see Pacioretty being taken to the boards with Chara's shoulder. But then, just before they break, it looks like Chara gives him an extra push just as they are coming up on the partition, using his upper arm and elbow. I think the shove was intentional.

Even so it's a poor design in every rink. When I played today I looked at the ones there and there was a plastic teflon tube covering the frame. Totally stupid and surprised it doesn't happen more often. Needs to have better padding and tapered.

Headshots should be banned outright, zero tolerance. No exceptions.

I agree with that statement, Scape, but I don't think this is a headshot. It's a penalty for interference and, because there's an injury, that makes it a major penalty. But a head-shot is defined as "targeting the head" and I don't see that here. I see this as an unfortunate confluence between head and arena geography. I don't believe Chara had any idea that the turn-buckle was there. Yes, he appearead to try and finish the check, but I don't think he meant to target the head for a shot. He deserves a suspension for the 5 + GM, but this is more of a fluke play than the sort of dirty penalties we want removed from the game.
