ROME (Reuters) - Pope Benedict, in his first clear pronouncement on gay marriages since his election, on Monday condemned same-sex unions as fake and expressions of "anarchic freedom" that threatened the future of the family.
The Pope, who was elected in April, also condemned divorce, artificial birth control, trial marriages and free-style unions, saying all of these practices were dangerous for the family.

"Today's various forms of dissolution of marriage, free unions, trial marriages as well as the pseudo-matrimonies between people of the same sex are instead expressions of anarchic freedom which falsely tries to pass itself off as the true liberation of man," he said.

The Pope spoke to families at Rome's St. John's Cathedral on an issue that has become highly controversial around the world, particularly in Europe and the United States.

In April, parliament in traditionally Catholic Spain gave initial approval to a law legalizing gay marriage. It is widely expected to be approved by the Senate and to become law.

But just last week, California's Assembly killed off a bill that would have allowed gay marriage in the most populous U.S. state.

The Pope, who as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger headed the Vatican's doctrinal department for more than two decades, said "pseudo freedoms" such as gay marriages were based on what he called the "banalisation of the human body" and of man himself

Ah, the ever so solid, unchanging Catholic Church. How long did it take to pardon Galileo again?

Yeah, right. Your ancestors probably didn't believe Galileo either...if they even had heard of him.

Now what brought that on? And for the record, some of the people in my family still don't believe Galileo, but that's beside the point. My point was that it took the RCC 400 years to succumb to overwhelming proof of Galileo's claims.

Maybe because the majority of people didn't believe him- and I guess some still don't- which is crazy. But we can only say this because hindsight is 20/20.

So don't marry someone of the same sex. I think Xtianity is wrong. I won't force my beliefs on others and would appreciate you giving others the same curtosy.

People are scared of change. And the church was scared of losing some of its powers, and aura.
But it's time for the church to move on artificial birth control and divorce. Both are personal decisions that don't involve the church. And neither is one that people make lightly - unless your a celebrity, ala Britnet Spears et al.

It's all about "control of the individual".

Remember...we are "Lambs" following a flock!

IMO destined for the abbatoire!

I agree with DerbyX about not trying to force your beliefs on others, I don't agree that Christianity is wrong. I consider myself a bit of a religious mutt. I don't believe any religion is wrong, I don't like the fact that they have no compassion or understanding for any other religion.

My ancestors believed that gold was the sweat of the sun, and silver was the tears of the moon. They had a deadly accurate calendar borrowed from the Mayans, advanced technology and mathematics, found steel, had the largest empire the America's had ever seen. And didn't go without a fight. Even then, they didn't die out completely.

Who am I?????? :D

On topic: forcing your beliefs on other people is just stupid and wrong. I'm still trying to understand how the elected a Hitler Nazi youth as pope of the Catholic Church. I know he's devoutly religious, but it is still creepy that a Hitler youth is running the church. *shiver*

Maybe you should read more about the Pope's biography and the "volunteerism" to be a part of the Hitler youth.
