I have been in marketing for about 10 years now. Obviously the primary consideration when advertising is target market. It makes perfect sense that the majority of people in commercials are white because the majority of people in Canada are white. The ratios in this case will never be a reflection of the demographics because although companies want money from everyone, marketing campaigns often have to focus on one segment of the population. It's not as though a marketing director sits down and says well 1 percent of our customers have an eyepatch so lets include someone with an eyepatch in 1 percent of our commercials. For everyday products, almost every marketing dollar is aimed at the direct centre of the demographic to maximize return. There are of course fringe markets I.e. smowboards are marketed to the young, viagra to the old. But even niche marketing aims to the centre of their repective audiences

Wonder what the same author would say if they dared make a Labatt's Blue ad featuring a bunch of natives?

I don't know about anyone else, but I can't remember the last time I saw a member of our First Nations, Inuit or Metis in the Hudson's Bay store

The last time a native person shopped at the Bay, they were screwed out of a six foot high stack of beaver pelts in exchange for a Brown Bess musket.

And that was just last week.

My solution is to not have any more ads.

Is that a new stereotype? Haven't heard that one.

Rather tame.

You haven't heard that natives are a bunch of drunks?

A quote from a guy I worked with: "When I woke up in my truck, I saw a pack of wild dogs around it, so I knew I was on an Indian reservation."

I've reminded one Russian joke: "Terrible Russian army was occupying Siberia and Mongol steppe lefting institutes, theathers, libraries and factories behind them." :) Of cource FN don't wan't to study, because they don't need. Country gives them all for free. Anyway, gypsies don't want to do it too. About other nations, I think that's just stereotypes.
