so why are they so gun happy there if they live in a low crime area - it's going to make it even more likely that people are killed not because they are attacking the person with the gun, but because the person with the gun was careless, like this mom, or stupid.

It's an ideological thing, apparently. It has nothing to do with logic or need.

A "small" caliber firearm stored in a zipped compartment in her purse which the youngster managed to open and retrieve the firearm from, then somehow causing it to discharge, killing her. All I could think of was that the gun was a semi automatic which had to have a round chambered. The safety may or may not have been engaged, as it usually takes very little effort to disengage most safeties. It was a tragic accident which could very easily been averted. It's truly amazing to me how incredibly stupid some very intelligent people can be.
