Settlement reached in residential school day scholars class-action lawsuit
$1:
Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett announced on Wednesday that a settlement had been reached in a class-action lawsuit for residential school day scholars. Bennett said the proposed settlement will see eligible survivors receive $10,000, and there is also a $50 million investment to create an Indigenous-led not-for-profit foundation.

WOW!!! $10,000 Dollars!!! Now you can get that 1998 hyundai elantra that you always wanted so badly!!! Seriously? $10,000 dollars for permanently screwing someone up for life? I have seen people who tried to commit suicide by purposely jumping off of a building and lived get more than that. The woman who burned herself with Mcdonalds coffee got $3 million dollars. That was in the 90's. $10,000 dollars for screwing someone up for life is chickenshit, pure and simple.

Exactly WHO is bargaining on the behalf of the First Nations in this case? Are they descendants of the people that handled the land treaties for them too? It sounds like they are getting royally screwed over all again. This settlement is nothing to be proud of.

Rick, your country hasn't made a single apology to any group or individual America's harmed since it's foundation. Not to the blacks, or your own Natives, or to any of the people in places like the Central American countries that were pretty much destroyed and left unable to function thanks to US policy there during the Cold War. And except for maybe some truly radical left-wing Democrats today there's not a single politician in your Congress from both parties that would vote for giving any of those people a single dime of help or "reparations".

Not picking a fight with you but don't make snide comments at us for our effort when your country makes no effort at all in doing the right thing for your own downtrodden. That $10000 our Natives got was tax free, and comes on top of dozens of other existing programs and funds that pretty much every Native in Canada is eligible for. At least Canada tries. The United States can't even come close to saying the same, not when your entire system is basically "lift yourself up by your own bootstraps, pal", a ridiculous ethic that safe and comfortable Americans love saying to those who have been so thoroughly ruined by what your country did to them that it is literally impossible for them to accomplish. You're sneering at us for not handing out a million dollars per Native when your country wouldn't even give any of them a single dime in recompense for the atrocities and destruction YOUR government and YOUR society deliberately inflicted on them.

Like, back off, eh. There's not a single American alive today who has the right to point their fingers at anyone else.

Scape Scape:
I wonder how many of those dislikes vote tory.

And this is a prime example of why society (and humans) will never move forward. There is always someone to turn a tragedy into a partisan issue instead of looking for the root cause. As long as the elites in charge can continue to pit us against one another, they remain in control of everything.

I hope for a day when partisanship and race are put aside to unite and get rid of the elites, their money, and greed in general. Then and ONLY then will we evolve in the right direction and save humanity.

-J.

The elites are not 'pitting' themselves, they are just catering to their chosen cliental. It's how they get power to begin with.

Bigots have no excuse but themselves, they weren't fooled into their ignorance, they chose it. The fact that it is popular amongst them is a sad testament to the state of humanity inhumanity to man.

Scape Scape:
Maxime Bernier

A white guy mows down a family and 215 indigenous are dug up at a residential school and this asshole is pissing and moaning about white privilege. FUCK OFF!

It's not about you Max you selfish asshole it's about US ALL OF US. Stop being so goddam selfish or are we not the right color to qualify?

Maxime Bernier is pretty much a living joke at this point. His party is a mess, his constituents threw him out on his ass once he broke from the CPC, he alienated the libertarians who formed the PPC's original base by catering to the alt-right white nationalists, from what I understand he's a punchline in the rest of Quebec and none of my Conservative friends in Alberta can stand him.

Every time you think Maxime Bernier can't dig himself any deeper, he'll pull out another shovel.

Very true, Max is a poster card of what not to do in politics. That said he still is a voice to the base that see Islam as a threat and think all Muslims are terrorists because he is the defacto choice when mainstream politicians pander to the center by even considering Islamofascism isn't real and do not declare Islam is a clear and present danger to Canada.

Clowns like him and Esra/the Rebel media do nothing but racebait all day and they are not doing that in a vacuum. They are feeding a demand.

Bernier's main success will come in costing the Tories the type of hard-fought seats in Central Canada that have a tendency to get decided by a few hundred votes. He'll be a gift to the Liberals for as long as he keeps his stupid little party of cranks operating.

Nearly a decade ago some pundits were arguing that a "Big Shift" had arrived that ensured the Tories would become the permanent 'natural governing party' in part because so many of the new immigrants coming to Canada would prefer the CPC in part because they were more conservative on morality issues.

Oh, the irony...

If he weren't neck deep in his own troubles right now, Jason Kenney would probably be facepalming every time Bernier or anyone associated with Rebel Media opens their mouths. Kenney was nicknamed the Minister of "curry in a hurry" because of the outreach he did to minority communities on the Tories' behalf. Hell, at one point the Tories had the most ethnically diverse caucus in Parliament!

I'd have to check again, but isn't Bernier's party unraveling here in Alberta, where the Tories least need it to? I seem to recall a bunch of riding associations being delisted by Elections Canada. Morale among the libertarians who liked what Bernier initially said was in the toilet because he was courting the alt-right types.

I initially liked Bernier. I am libertarian and really thought I found a political home. Then he started to speak. I realized then, that mistakes had been made.

Bernier's put both his feet in it so many times he probably buys a new pair of shoes every week, especially with this latest fiasco.

$1:

At a news conference on Thursday morning, Premier Brian Pallister said Bernier would be "light in the pocket book" if he planned on violating Manitoba's public health orders.

The sane parts of the Canadian right want nothing to do with him. I wouldn't be surprised if Stephen Harper made a tub of popcorn every time he saw or read a story about Bernier during the 2019 election.

I will agree with you on my country being pretty stingy when it comes to apologies. They do seem to be as rare as hen's teeth. But hey I bet your old job offered you an apology when they let you go. "Sorry its not personal, its just the way it is". Sound about right? How many groceries did that apology put in your pantry? How many months rent did that apology pay for? How many bills did that apology pay for?

https://harvardpolitics.com/a-progressi ... s-peoples/
That link sums it up pretty well. In it we have a Canadian stating that:" "benevolent paternalism" is the Canadian way....we apologise for things, but I don't know that we get any more done." That pretty much sums up Canada. It mentions how Trudeau was apologizing for the residential schools back in 2017. You did not get around to any actual money until the whole world is up your ass over the discovery of those dead kids. And yes the money IS chickenshit! If the thread was about an American settlement for Native Americans for $10,000, I would be saying the same thing. You mention all these great things that Canada is doing for the First Nations, yet our natives live better than yours do. We gave them the right to vote in 1924. Canada in 1960. Like the article said they have the right to establish casinos without interference from the state. First Nations do not. First Nations members born in Canada from tribes that cross the border can freely move into and work in the U.S. Thousands have done so. It does not work the other way around. Canada likes to claim that they did not sign off on the Jay Treaty, even though what is now Canada was part of Britain that did sign the treaty. Plenty of First Nations members from Canada move to the states. Damn near zero Native Americans move to Canada. Please stop pretending that you are "doing something" for the First Nations other than handing off a check to a corrupt chief that is putting almost all of the money in his own pocket. You know that the money is not going where it is needed most. Stop trying to apologize your way out of shit. Stop with the chickenshit payments meant to make YOU feel better.

If you want to start a thread about how badly the U.S. has treated its native population, I would be glad to participate. The whole world knows how badly they were treated. I agree with llama that the thread should stay on target, but I am not the one who made a post about a First Nation settlement in a thread about some asshole killing innocent Muslims. I was responding to that post, just like I am responding to your post. No one has responded more in the U.S. police misconduct thread than me. The vast majority of people being mistreated are people of color. You have actually called me out for spending too much time in that thread before. People being mistreated because of their color pisses me off. Canada just like the U.S. has mistreated its native population. So don't think that you get to write a check to some chief on the take and give away some chickenshit check for $10,000 and get off the hook. I will NOT be quiet!!! I WILL point fingers!!! Those fingers may be pointed at Washington D.C., or they may be pointed at Ottawa. If I see something fucked up I WILL speak up!!! I do not care if I step on someone's toes or not.
