TheQuietKidd TheQuietKidd:
Yes, that's exactly why our Liberal government and the governments of many of our NATO allies decided to send troops... it has nothing to do with the millions of children who are now enrolled in schools, many of whom are girls. Or the ousting of a group of people who would have women condemned to a life of subservience. Or how about the cracking down on weapons and man power of a number of terrorist cells who could have been the next guy to fly a plane into a landmark near you?
Nope, had nothing to do with that, fuckwad.

I hate to break it to you guys, but there's NOTHING we're doing in Afghanistan that's protecting us from terrorism. In fact, the opposite is true.

We've stopped Al Quaeda from freely training there haven't we? We've plugged a rather large support system they had from the Taliban haven't we?

A very modest and short-term gain. In return for this, we've given them the instability and war they were craving and created nearly ideal conditions for them to recruit in.

The previous liberal governments sent troups to afghanistan as peace keepers and aids to helping rebuild.. it was Harper bowing to the bush administration that put our troups in combat... so what are we doing there? fighting for the good old USA! now they want to pull out.. go figure.... do Canadians understand why we are there.. poll shows margin of no we dont and should leave... the issue of this war, the issue of the environment and the sorry folks but no go on the tax breaks will bring him down .......... and out in the spring ....yeah!

Hmmm I know some guys at work that were part of the first group of troops to go to Afganistan. They didn't seem to think they were peacekeepers.

Actually, it was the Liberals under Chretien who put us in Afghanistan, and under Martin who renewed our mission, so you can't blame Harper for this one boys and gals.

There are two groups that are to blame for the current situation in Afghanistan.

The first are NATO countries who are unwilling to deploy to the really dangerous parts of Afghanistan (Germany, France and Italy to name a few). I'm of the opinion that Canada has shed more than its fair share of blood southern Afghanistan and it's time for those countries to step up to the plate. If they are not willing, there is no reason why we should have to stay.

The other group is Pakistan and any other nation providing support to El Qaeda and the Taliban. As long as the Taliban can flee across the border and be safe from attacks, we'll never totally destroy them as a threat.

Oh come on Streaker, should we have just let the Taliban carry on killing people who's beards were too short and all the other nasty things those nutters did?

I see what you are saying but I think doing nothing was the worst of two shitty options. It is gonna take years thewre but it took years in Bosnia and Serbia (ten I believe) to sort those countries out to a stage where they at least stop killing each other.

It has to be worth a try out there, especially with the current mega instability in Pakistan.

It's stupid how many of these same folks who complain about us in Afghanistan then bitch because we're doing nothing in Darfur. I guess to their minds, the grass is greener or the other war is always more noble?

MBTR is right with the CBC crack. The previous governments definately got an easy ride on Chretien's war, even when they flip-flopped about sending prisoners to the US-Afghans.
Now that the CPC is in charge, the "get Harper" mentality is back and we hardly see any examples of what good is being done, only doom and gloom. With such a media dis-information campaign going on, it's easy to see why Canadians "don't get Afghanistan".

Yeah I recall the CBC impartial war-cry---"HIDDEN AGENDA!"

Meanwhile the CBC down-played the exposed LIBRANO agenda----self enrichment at taxpayer expense.
