This is VERY disturbing to me. We have a profession that is already disproportionally composed of angry, stupid, anti-social characters and we're going to LOWER the standards?

Actually this sort of makes sense except for the opposite reasons
If the RCMP was (and it was) run by a bunch of myopic sob's and if they set the "standards" for what type of people that the force would hire...then obviously they are going to hire people like themselves.
So if the RCMP is already full of these sorts of people then "lowering" the standards actually means hiring beyond the traditional limitations of the hiring policy were. Therefore allowing people who were somehow excluded before.
Take for example education. If the standard was a post secondary diploma or degree you might exclude a young man or woman who started working after high school because they could not afford to go just didn't want to go to school.
We all know many people who have barely a grade 12 education (or even less) that are brilliant and successful.
It is easy to exclude people that don't fit the mold. But I know alot of people who don't fit the mold that would make great cops.
