Lemmy Lemmy:
It sounds to me like you're biased by your experience. I, on the other hand, have the perspective of an objective, third-party researcher. And you're right, teacher education programs are a joke. The training program doesn't have any impact on the realities of the job. You think police college teaches cadets anything about being a good cop?
Hell no, but I'm also talking about teaching. They said teaching was a joke.

Tricks Tricks:
Are we talking about academics or larger aspects of raising children?
All encompassing. Of course they play a large role in the academic world, but that's also one that a parent, if they could set aside the time, could fill.

$1:
I would suggest that education is an important aspect of a child's life, but only one of many.
Agreed.

$1:
Would an individual teacher be a "significant influence" on the raising of a child? Likely not, except in rare circumstances. But the cumulative value of a quality education is certainly significant, though also not close to being on-par with the influence of a parent, in most circumstances.

Then I'd say we agree. If a kid receives a good solid education, along with not having fuck hole parents they're gonna be (generally) a solid person.

I think what I (and possibly Brenda) were objecting to was Beaver's seeming claim that teachers are as responsible or more responsible for the raising of youth than the parents. That's at least how I read it. Me no rikey.

My brother and sister's high school math teacher on the other hand active tried to fail students, marked answers on tests that were right, wrong, and was eventually canned. How well liked do you think she was?

That's the result of a personal rather than a professional failing.

ShepherdsDog ShepherdsDog:

Well from your previous posts about teachers, you've clearly demonstrated a bias about the entire teaching profession based on your limited personal experiences....and yes they are an extremely limited number of contacts. Everyone has had shitty teachers and there are always going to be those who become teachers because of the 'holidays', although most of them can't handle the teaching they have to do during the rest of the year, and usually quit.

Or become bitter and take it out on the Kids. I'd say I am probably biased, but that's because my family went through hell in the school board. My Mother was the Chair of the PTA or something, fuck if I remember. She got so sick of the shit the board was pulling she pulled me and my two siblings out of school and stuck us in a private school, as did some other parents. So yeah, I'm probably a little jaded.

I think many people work this way. One could say you hate all Chinese based on your posts in the fuck thread, but I doubt it (hopefully)

Their opinions may not earn much merit in an academic discussion, but one should simply dismiss them out of hand. And chatting on a forum is not an academic discussion.

It's also just one example. One of the teachers (who eventually ran as an NDP MPP) told my parents my sister couldn't write, and would never be able to. I had several teachers give me a 70 on everything without feedback, regardless of if I followed their outline, leading me to believe they didn't actually look at it. I've had teachers insult to my face family members. The school board tried to deny me my volunteer hours on some bullshit reason. I could go on and on.

However, this is just my experiences. Doesn't mean all teachers are this way. It's just really hard for me to say other wise when in 11 years of public schooling I had maybe 5-7 good teachers and the rest were garbage.
