Several people have blamed the rise in the Canadian dollar on the energy sector. Based on world currencies what we have realy seen is a fall in the American dollar. The fact that 80% of our trade is with a country whose economy has fallen in the trash can for the last decade has a large impact when said county's dollar plummets.

Now on the bright side the strongest performing economy in 2011 was the US. Corporate profits are up significantly and it appears as if we are entering a bull phase in the US economy.

Redford is out to lunch and she is picking a fight she cannot win. She would do well to heed what McGuinty said (it was not an apology. This is a country that is being badly hurt by Alberta`s oil policies. Alberta needs to take a look at the clean energy initiatives of Ontario and get behind them as a replacement for fossil fuels.

Alberta could, in that way, secure its own future against the collapse of oil that is certainly coming.

Redford also should take a little time to learn something about the rest of the country and shelve her myopic views. Ontario`s deficit is one that was incurred by the previous government with the stimulus added. It was a government with her Right Wing shortsightedness (euphemism) that put Ontario into deficit. Ontario`s spending is not at all unwarranted and, in fact, it has not yet got back to the levels it had when the province was much healthier.

I read much about Redford being a more progressive conservative than were her predecessors. It seems she is not and that, like Klein and Harris who started the rot in social programmes, education and healthcare, she favours business over people.

She also needs to understand that Ontario`s energy strategy will create several times the number of jobs that Alberta`s will. Apart from all the health and other social benefits.

You really are a one-trick pony. (read; real horses ass). I suggested in an earlier post that perhaps you should do some research before shooting from the lip. Obviously....

Perhaps you just need a wee bit of tutelage. Start by googling Alberta alternative energy programs. If you actually do this, and then actually take some time to READ some of the info, you will discover this little tidbit. "Alberta produces more wind-power energy than any other province,( BTW that includes ONFUCKINTARIO!) and has more than 40 more such projects on the go or in developement stages.

Don't you think you're asking a little too much from what's-his-name?

However, I can definitely confirm these wind projects because I live in Southern Alberta, which is windy as hell. Just take a drive west from Lethbridge to Pincher Creek on the Crowsnest Trail and you will see countless wind turbines. There's an advantage to living on the eastern slopes of the Rockies.

As for what's-his-name, the man has no imagination whatsoever. I don't think "green" energy will ever meet humanity's energy needs. I think the future's in nuclear fusion and space-based solar panels, which will provide us with enough energy unlike a bunch of windmills and terrestrial solar farms. Largely because they won't depend on the weather.

I think what's-his-name is just one of those hardcore, center of the Universe dinosaurs from the last century that likes to bash the west at every opportunity, dressed up as an environmentalist.

You really do not think very far or very much. Swallow the propaganda.

Alberta has no plans for significant alternative energy production. Alberta's "strategy" calls for a reduction in emissions 0f 14% by 2050. Ontario plans deeper cuts than that by 2020 - much deeper. Alberta;s "plan" would make it the world's laggard. Meanwhile it "plans" a fourfold increase in oil sands production that makes its trivial target impossible.

Ontario's Green Energy Act is being implemented, not just talked about and coal facilities are being shut down while many alternative energy sites are being identified and developed. Alberta has a little wind power installed but no plan to do very much more.

If i would go out and buy a lottery ticket, and IF I would pick all the right numbers, I would be a millionare!

We are dealing with facts here, and the fact of the matter is that ALBERTA is doing something positive about alternative energy whilst 'Ontario' is still scratching their collective ass and THINKING ABOUT DOING SOMETHING POSITIVE!

Yogi,

Why bother?

Dr. C nailed it...Alberta = Oil Sands = Bad, for a very large number of Canadians.

You are not dealing with facts. You are dealing with deception. There is very little Wind Power installed in Alberta. There is a lot undergoing environmental investigation and under construction in Ontario. Alberta has no plans for any significant expansion. Ontario already has the projects under consideration or construction.

And Redford is not what she pretends to be. She is, like so many politicians, indentured to the fossil fuel industry. Ironic when there are far more jobs to be had with alternative sources and real economic gains to be made.

Dalton should read this and maybe reconsider his pipe dreams.

Goodnight Sunshine
Germany is cutting solar-power subsidies because they are expensive and inefficient.

$1:
Germany once prided itself on being the “photovoltaic world champion”, doling out generous subsidies—totaling more than $130 billion

$1:
It is estimated that this increase alone will lead to a $260 hike in the average consumer’s annual power bill.

$1:
despite the massive investment, solar power accounts for only about 0.3 percent of Germany’s total energy.

$1:
Using solar, Germany is paying about $1,000 per ton of CO2 reduced. The current CO2 price in Europe is $8. Germany could have cut 131 times as much CO2 for the same price. Instead, the Germans are wasting more than 99 cents of every euro that they plow into solar panels.

One of the first rules for understanding climate science is to never read or listen to Lomborg. Lomborg's first book was, on analysis by a climate scientist, found to contain 234 errors of fact; thirty seven (I don't remember within a couple) to be so egregious as to be deliberate fraud or gross negligence.

Lomborg has followed the same deception lifestyle ever since.

He is a fraud.

You might like to read this about Germany's solar industry. Its cutting of subsides is a reflection of the economic austerity that has gripped the world recently AND of a reduced need for subsidies in Germany.

Both solar and wind are now competitive with traditional sources without the indirect benefits of ridding the world of the pollution effects. Which is why I say Alberta is riding for a severe fall if it does not wake up to the danger of its single minded affair with oil.

Hopefully these links work in the real world:

$1:
Priority Initiatives:
1.1 Monitor and report on the effectiveness and competitiveness of Alberta’s royalty system to incent development and maximize benefits to Albertans.
1.2 Maintain and support Alberta’s investment competitiveness within the natural gas, oil, oil sands and mineral development sectors.
1.3 Ensure energy and mineral resource revenues are accurately calculated, collected and reported.
1.4 Develop policies and programs to encourage value-added energy development in Alberta.
1.5 Support the development of unconventional oil and gas resources to maximize Alberta’s long-term economic sustainability.
1.6 Explore opportunities for the expansion and diversification of Alberta’s energy markets, including the development of increased transportation capacity and a Clean Energy to Asia Strategy, to better serve Alberta’s
long-term interests.

eureka eureka:
Ontario's Green Energy Act is being implemented, not just talked about and coal facilities are being shut down while many alternative energy sites are being identified and developed. Alberta has a little wind power installed but no plan to do very much more.

$1:
• Of Alberta’s 13,400 MW of electricity producing capacity, approximately 2,028 MW is renewable energy.

• The total amount of new wind power generation proposed to be built between 2011 and 2015 totals approximately 6,786 MW of installed capacity (58% of the total amount of energy proposed).
