Amanda was born on August 29, 1972 to a Trinidadian mother and Canadian father in Toronto. Amanda has had a love and aptitude for music and singing since she was just 3 years old, the age at which she had Classical training from the Royal Conservatory of Music! By her mid teens however, she knew that it was time to persue something different than classic music.

One night Amanda and a friend went to a club to listen to one of her favorite singers, Ella Fitzgerald. After the show, they went backstage to meet her. Fitzgerald tripped and fell, but Amanda's friend caught her. They began to talk and Marshall confided that she wanted to be a singer. She sang for Ella, who then assured her with practice, she could become successful.

Another backstage meeting (with Jeff Healey) would be the Starting point for her career. Healey Had convinced her to sing with him in a nightclub,So accompanied by her father, the 17 year old beauty sang while Jeff Healey played guitar.Within 4 months she had formed a band and opened for Jeff on his Canadian tour, even though she didn't even have an album at that point. (Later she would tour with Tom Cochrane on his "Life Is a Highway" tour.)

In 1994, Amanda signed with Sony Music Canada(after turning Columbia records down due to lack of experience and wanting to be more prepared ).
