Each branch has its own regulations on what kind of tattoo you can have (if any) but all of them are uniform in that if your tattoo causes an infection then it's on you. While the service is going to cover your treatment you're going to pay for it with a reduction in rank and pay and you'll also get a negative fitness report which pretty much means the end of your military career.
