An Alberta woman who was left with physical disabilities following cancer surgery is fighting back after she was told not to return to a popular grocery store unless she brought help — because she couldn't pack her groceries fast enough.

No frills apparently means no respect.

Respect and human dignity are 'frills'.

The obvious solution is to close the store so no one can shop there anymore. Then everyone will be equally fucked when it comes to groceries and prescriptions.

And that's what will happen after the government and the lawyers get done anyway.

They’re probably going to use this as an excuse to cut more cashiers and install more self checkouts.

Just myself, but I do not believe it is the obligation of private businesses to be forced to accommodate every single person whose disability prevents them from doing business like most people.

Find someone to help you if you need it but FFS don't go out into the world demanding that everyone else has to kiss your ass and provide services to you that they can't provide to everyone else.

Two thoughts on the subject. First off just what kind of jerks are shopping in this store? Who would just stand there and watch a handicapped person struggle with bagging their groceries? Isn't it human nature to hold a door open for someone even if they are not handicapped? If you see someone in a wheelchair in a store looking up at a high shelf, don't you offer to help? It sounds like some real classless people shopping in this store to me.

Why are there no laws mandating that the store provide some assistance? I did a quick check and found out that only three provinces have such laws. It should be a federal law. Handicapped people have the same right to eat as everyone else. They should anyway. It is not going to kill this establishment to provide some needed assistance to a money paying customer that needs it. Just my two cents worth. It sounds like this store could use my two cents. Trying to buy someone's silence with $100 is laughable.

She is always free to shop at a store that bags for you. No frills does not bag groceries, if they do not have the staff to help why can she not call in advance?

Ummm, the store was pissed off at her because she "took too long to bag her groceries". It's not a case of accommodating her, it's a case of her "inconveniencing" them because she took a few minutes longer than the average person. She didn't ask them for any special treatment. She didn't demand her own checkout lane ffs.

Excuse me but, THEY aren't PAYING her to bag shit. So really, they need to fuck off, quit whining and quit acting like their entire business day was ruined because of one cancer patient taking longer than "normal" to bag her groceries.

We shop at No Frills too. I'm also to the point where I need a cane to get around. And yeah, I'm not exactly breaking records bagging our groceries either. But I can tell you this, the first employee than whines about it is going to be eating the part of the cane that isn't wrapped around their fuckin' neck.

I don't expect special treatment and I don't ask for it. But for cryin' out loud, if me taking a little longer to bag my groceries is going to ruin your business day, well then you should fucking re-examine your business model.

LOL!!! You owe me a new laptop. I blew bourbon and coke all over mine through my nose with your response about wrapping your cane around someones neck!!! I love it!

I can understand stores cutting back on hired help to save money, and passing the savings along to the customer. If a store has a cashier and a bagger, than getting rid of the bagger can save some payroll, but lengthen the line. That is what Walmart does. The cashier also bags the items. No one can compete with Walmart prices. This cashier in no frills has already rang up the ladies purchase. They have collected the payment. They cannot start ringing up the next customer because the previous customer's items are still on the counter waiting to be bagged. So basically the cashier is just standing around doing nothing because the store has a no bagging policy. An employee is just standing around doing nothing while customers suffer as a result. Anyone see a problem with this policy? They are on the clock. They have an obligation to help move the line along in any way that they can. Quit acting like a douchebag pointing to your no bagging policy, and start earning your pay and keep the line moving.

This whole episode reminds me of a breaking bad episode where they had bought a bunch of uncut pizza pies from some discount pizza place to save money.

On the other side, unless people ask for assistance, they often don't want it. Especially if they are disabled. It's a way of taking back a little of the human dignity that Cancer takes away from us.

There are laws, and the 'No Frills' chain has a bunch of other stores under the 'Loblws' and 'Superstore' brands, and those stores will provide a person to help people with disabilities manage. They will even help you bag your groceries.

But yea, the pay off for her silence was only initiated the Streisand effect.
