If they recruit from the the area of Jane and Fitch, it would reduce costs for basic training.

That sounds right.

First let's define special forces.

the units of a country's armed forces that undertake covert, counterterrorist, and other specialized operations.

These people would be a "special" force much like "special" needs and not at all like the pointy end of the stick warriors that the article and gov't are trying to portray.

Putting a bunch of basement dwelling game playing, overweight, computer hacking losers in the military right off the street and calling them "Special Forces" would negate all the positive benefits training gives military personnel.

These elites would have:

No proper military training,
No real military comprehension,
No unit cohesion,
No proper discipline,
No esprit de corps,
No military ethos,
No military ethics,
and finally a built in excuse for any excesses committed. Plus it'd cost millions to convert the basement in the puzzle palace into a suitable safe space for these pampered millennial "warriors".

So these people would be nothing more than a cluster of untrained civies that the gov't gave uniforms to make them fell important and included.

BTW this is just another in the long list of Liberal Recruiting plans that will likely end in failure just like "need more women", "need more Natives" "need more immigrants" and "need fancier uniforms".

What the gov't doesn't understand is that you can't "force" people into the military if they don't want to be in it. Unless of course you go with conscription which would fly in the face of the gov'ts current Military doctrine which is obviously "less is more"

Wouldn't a lot of this be part of an intelligence agency's responsibility? Sending a technical specialist with special forces teams to do things that they don't have the knowledge to do? If you need information extracted from a target you need that "computer hacking loser".

COD, BF, and MoH count as military training AND education. They've fought the best of the best and won.

On a serious note, recruiting some gamers may not be a bad idea, I suspect drones will feature more prominently in the future, especially in small, neglected militaries like ours. So having someone who can fly in a flight sim or something, may be of benefit when we have a drone fleet. But, maybe it won't. We're at that weird crossroads where technology is radically changing, we need to do the same.

Recruiting people who are different than front line soldiers makes absolute sense. Only the astoundingly retarded think that the next major conflict won't contain significant engagements in cyber space. But that's not really what I would expect the role of special forces to be. Maybe as support to a team, but not embedded.

They aren't "special forces" they're contractors and employees so the only reason that the gov't would want to call them "special forces" would be so they'd be protected under the Geneva Convention as soldiers when they're asked to and do something illegal or immoral which is where this whole scenario seems to be heading.

As to the hiring of hackers for the extraction of information. Well that's once again the purview of CSIS and other non military agencies and I'm already pretty sure that we already have people who aren't part of the military working in that field.


So why the sudden urge to create a new untrained military dept? We already have "trained military personnel" for gathering gathering information who work closely with the other Canadian agencies.

Sure, but when a gov't or media outlet uses the term "Forces" it usually implies a highly trained and loyal body of individuals who work at the behest of the Gov't for the country. Not a bunch of highly untrained loyalty unknown people who were put in uniform just to do covert "work" for the gov't.

I'm sorry but this sounds like a story the Beaver would create.Maybe they want some CSIS and CSE capability within the umbrella of the DND. Less inter-agency nonsense if they are within the rank and file. But I agree that they shouldn't be called special forces, that's silly.
