Documents obtained by the Coalition for Gun Control reveal the committee advising Public Safety Minister Vic Toews wants some prohibited weapons, including hand guns and assault rifles, reclassified to make them more easily available.
Yeah guys that's gonna help with the public perception of the tough on crime bill. Freakin idiots and besides everyone knows you don't need that AK74 for gopher control, you really need a Barrett M82.

The Accuracy International AS50 has a much higher fire rate.
"bootlegga" said This is just another issue where Harper, if he wants to remain in the PMO, has to follow a centrist approach and not a party one.
Which is why for now in light of a total lack of decent leadership from other parties makes him a very smart and capable PM. I for one am glad he's in office rather then any of the other current "leaders".
I do wonder however why we paid to have such a committee if the PM is just going to do what he feels will get him elected anyway.
"Harper rejects committee's advice to relax gun laws"
Very smart. He delivered on axing the long gun registry. That's plenty enough for the foreseeable future.
I'm generally pro-gun, and yet I see no particular benefit to relaxing regulations on handguns and assault rifles. I think it would be stupid of Harper to go down that road.
We need to keep the FN FAL prohibited while the SVT-40 is non restricted. Otherwise our gun laws might make sense.
For those that don't know the FN FAL is prohibited, making it just about impossible to own. It fires a full sized rifle round at 7.62x51mm, would be semi automatic, and fed from a detachable magazine. Was built as a military battle rifle, and is known as "The right arm of the Free World".
The SVT-40 fires a full sized rifle round at 7.62x54mm is semi automatic, and is fed from a detachable magazine. Was built as a military battle rifle.
One is prohibited, while the other is non restricted. It doesn't even require the higher level of a restricted license that you would need for the middle class of fire arms. This is the type of stupidity the firearms advisory committee was trying to correct with it's suggestion to move some firearms out of the prohibited class.
If such a rifle is too dangerous to have people own, then all rifles of such abillity should be prohibited. Lucky we have a neat little check because rifles with the same abillity are privately owned, so we can check our crime numbers to see just how dangerous those rifles are. I'm going to go out on a limb and say the number of violent crimes commited with rifles similar to the FN FAL are next to zero if not zero. Which is fairly good evidence for lifting the ban on the FAL.
I'm disapointed that Harper was cool to the idea publicly, but I'm hopeful for something in the future. As for the comments by Bob Rae, well I expect very little from anti gun people;
I can't believe I watched a grown man say that over and over.
Pro smart gun regulation people should team up with pro pot people to try and get both our intrests passed into law. What do you say stoners?
Xort, it is typical of the ignorant anti-gun crowd that they are unable to form a cogent thought when it comes to firearms. All they know is that they're deeply afraid of big scary guns and, worse, they're even more afraid of the kind of masculine, independent types who are proficient with firearms.
I still have (maybe misguided) hope that rational fact driving arugments might change someone's mind when it comes to gun regulation. Failing that I have a feeling that getting anti gun people out to do some shooting might change their minds.

Then again Bad Scary Guns.
Unlikely.
In California one of my .22 rifles was banned because it had a heat shroud around the barrel. I removed that heat shroud and barrel, installed a far more accurate target barrel and the same rifle is legal again. There's no difference in the rate of fire (semi-auto), nor do the 20-round magazines work any differently. The rifle just isn't visually 'scary' anymore.
They also outlawed my .50 caliber rifles which leaves me virtually defenseless with just my 20mm M42 Carl Gustav (vastly updated) which can reach out and touch targets at up to three miles. About twice the range of a .50
None of this crap makes any sense yet these pantywaisted nimrods keep doing this stuff because most people are utterly clueless about firearms.

It also helps if you edit the video to remove any actual content.
NDP MP Nathan Cullen, who has voted in the past to end the registry, said he can't support a bill that will allow more urban assault rifles into society. He pointed to examples of rifles that are not made for hunting.
NDP MP Jack Harris referred to the type of weapon as "bad, scary" guns, which are unrestricted but had been tracked through the long-gun registry. Harris argued they fall outside the realm of prohibited weapons but are still something that should be registered.
Despite initial speculation the Conservatives might support the amendment, they voted it down with little debate. ... Cullen, who is also running for the party's leadership, cited the Ruger Mini 14 and the Swiss Arms Black Special as guns rarely used by hunters and farmers.
So it was an amendment to C-19 (Ending the Long-gun Registry Act), to add some weapons to the restricted list?
It's hard to tell from that video if there was a cogent argument or not, there's nothing in it.
Both Mr. Harper and Mr. Toews stressed the Conservative governments firearm focus is now on tougher sentences for gun-related convictions.
Right on!
Tougher sentences for gun related crimes should be the main focus. I'm all against gun ownership for mentally unstable individuals, and those convicted of felonies. However, we need to have a fine balance so we don't needlessly penalize law abiding folks who simply want to acquire a specific firearm for various legitimate reasons (farm, hunting, target shooting, private collection ...).
We can look to the Swiss for guidance or role model, as they have a high gun ownership rate, and yet have a very low rate of gun related crimes.
Therefore, relaxing gun ownership laws would allow more freedom for the law abiding gun owner, and toughening the laws for gun related crimes would further restrict freedoms for criminals committing gun related crimes. It's a win-win situation.
We can't live in a society of fear so much to the point where we penalize the entire population based on the actions of a few.

Pacify those who view this as a significant issue. I can see some laws being relaxed, but assault rifles are a huge no-no.
