Who's to blame for juror no-shows: 'Sad generation' or broken system?

There are conflicting views on how to improve a no-show rate for prospective jurors that averages about 20 per cent across Canada.

When a Nova Scotia judge recently decried a "flabby, sad generation" for failing to appear for jury duty, he likely struck a chord in courtrooms across Canada.

Most provinces and territories that track absenteeism among prospective jurors (and few of them do) report that about one-fifth of citizens don't show up when summoned.

"I believe that many of them don't know that it's a duty that they have," said Richard Prihada, vice-president of the Quebec association of criminal lawyers and president of Montreal's criminal lawyers association. "A lot of times people ask me, 'Well, how can I get out of it?'"

OK, no offence, but the judge is the one who looks flabby and sad here. He looks like your typical grumpy, old white guy.

It's a capitalist world buddy. We live cheque to cheque. Some fat-cat judge can maybe to take a few weeks off work gratis, but teh rest of us are trying to make ends meet.

Me too. I would love to be on a jury, but highly doubt I could afford it. I have savings, but have no intention of using them to coveer lost income due to jury duty.

Maybe they should start taking volunteers!

I was going to say. It might be easier to just have some approved "Jury Duty" list, like a voter registration list. At the same time, compensation for jury duty should be higher to compensate individuals better.

I've got a job that reimburses jury duty, so, like you, I would treat it as a life experience. But yes, $20 a day is more an insult than anything.

I don't think this judge is doing the system any favours. Referring to an entire generation as flabby and sad is more likely to engender ill will and lend creedence to the idea that the judiciary is out of touch.

Also, considering that sheriffs can't even be bothered to round up people wanted for crimes a lot worse than skipping jury duty, you wonder about the priority of using a scarce resource (sheriffs) to pick up truants.

If you think that's insulting, try getting subpoenaed as a witness. Last time that happened I got a cheque from the Court Clerk's office for a whopping $2.75 for the day.

That's not even enough to cover parking.

This is how it actually went down. I showed up at 8:30am as instructed. I sat there until 3PM when the case was called, but as the accused had not shown up for court, apparently cuz he skipped bail, it was put on hold.
Upon leaving the court room I heading for the clerks office as per SOP and got my cheque. I then threw it down on the counter and told them to keep it as they obviously needed the money more than I did.

    Ya jerk

I liked it when Grandpa Simpson said "the secret to getting out of jury duty is to tell them you're prejudiced against all races". 8)

I did jury duty once. It was OK but I was unemployed at the time so it really didn't affect my real life in any significant way.
