BlackBerry Ltd said its popular chat application BBM for rival Android-based handsets and Apple Inc smartphones like iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C has witnessed over 10 million downloads in the first 24 hours of its re-launch.
"DrCaleb" said Hmmm. People don't like their phone company spying on them. How odd.
It has very little to do with security for the average Joe. The use of shitty messenger system speaks to the lack of care.
The majority of people opting for BBM are former Blackberry users looking to get back on and inviting their new iPhone and Android friends to all connect.

SMS was never designed to be reliable, and there is no way to make it more reliable. It's a kludge that makes use of the 'caller ID' bandwidth(and why it pisses me off that they charge for it's use), which is why it's limited in the number and character set that can be used.
BBM however was designed to be secure and reliable. The character limitation is also a result of the protocols used.

I see a lot more of the "Hooray I can get rid of my crappy phone and get a Samsung!"

Samsung devices would be at the bottom of my list. A distant 3rd to Apple and Blackberry IMO. Cheap feeling phones, sloppy OS...just not for me. I use my iPad far more than I use the Galaxy.
FWIW, I own 2 iPads, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Playbook, iPhone 5 and a Z10.
Good job - I'd love to see BB survive and stage a comeback like Apple did a decade ago. Let's hope this is a start.
Sounds like Balsille may have been vindicated;
Inside RIM, the brash Mr. Balsillie had championed a bold strategy to re-establish the company’s place at the forefront of mobile communications. The plan was to push wireless carriers to adopt RIM’s popular BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) instant messaging service as a replacement for their short text messaging system (SMS) applications – no matter what kind of phone their customers used.
It was a novel plan. If RIM could get BBM onto hundreds of millions of non-BlackBerry phones, and charge fees for it, the company would have an enormous new source of profit, Mr. Balsillie believed. “It was a really big idea,” said an employee who was involved in the project.
But the plan ran into stiff opposition at senior levels. Not long after Mr. Heins took over as RIM’s CEO in January, 2012, he killed it, with Mr. Lazaridis’s support.
That was it for Mr. Balsillie. Weeks later, he resigned from the board and cut his ties to the company.

Downloaded it for my IPhone and they're holding my spot in line.
Just hard-close down the app and open it up again and it should allow you to sign in. Worked just fine on the wife's iPhone.
Angela Merckel should use a Blackberry.
But there just aren't any apps for it . . .
