The Poppy Appeal officially started in the UK today, they are going for a million pounds.

All money raised in Edmonton, stays in the Edmonton area.
The purpose of the Greater Edmonton Poppy Fund, which is a service branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, is to assist our Veterans and their dependants. The money raised is used to provide those ex-service personnel and their families in need with dental and eye care, medical equipment, prescriptions, shelter, clothing and other assistance. It is only through receiving your financial support that we can continue to provide these necessary services.
Poppy Funds are made available through the generosity of the Canadian public and consequently they are part of the public trust between Canadians and the Legion. As a consequence of this bond, Poppy Funds are held in trust at each level of the organization and may be used for approved purposes only.
Each year we are able to offer financial assistance and a number of other services and programs to Veterans and their families thanks to the money raised during the Poppy Campaign. Through the generous donations of Canadians everywhere, the Poppy Trust Fund continues to help those we acknowledge through Remembrance.
All money taken in from Poppy donation is always returned to the community - 100% of the funds. This is true of each Legion Command across Canada. Not many charities do that.
The only way to defend the fund from those douchebag companies who have started asking you at the checkout if you want to donate to some nameless charity is to aggressively defend the Legion's copyright on the image and use of the Poppy. Otherwise there will be some unscrupulous people out there sucking the goodwill that Canadians have for the Legion, out of what the Legion does.
