Really? Let's cut off trade and see what the real number is. I'm thinking it's much higher than Ottawa cares to admit.
I know what you are stating though I don't think it is the right spin. I think we should trade more with other countries, in particular via exporting and we should EARN their investment dollars and market access. If Canadians had half a concern about global competition and national success as we do for say; ice hockey, we would be in an enviable position. Let's have Americans hired by Canadian companies operating in America.
I found it funny that we had the "own the podium" campaign during the 2010 Olympics, we kick some ass during Pan Am games, yet, we run and cower from free markets, innovation and ingenuity. I have said it many times, imagine if Japan were located where Canada is, same population with their ambition and drive to invent and re-define their economy (from what was agrarian to their high-tech economy), how much larger would their economy be than ours?
Again, I'm just the messenger, and this isn't a shot at every Canadian, we have many who unfortunately don't have access to seed money and investment opportunities to excel globally. Quite frankly I would be far supportive of this use of tax dollars than big money, government "investments" which often just becomes waste.
