They get charged with something more serious than mischief if there's evidence that they're lying, like happened with those three black ratchet bitches who claimed they got attacked by a pack of "white racists" on a bus until the footage from the camera inside the bus showed them doing a group beat-down on some helpless white girl. It was actually part of the campaign too because Clinton tweeted out support for the attackers when they presumed it really was a hate crime and didn't retract it even after the liars had been exposed.

Civil suits against liars when they're exposed seems more to be the avenue to redress these things because in the absence of physical harm against those they're lying about, or some kind of property damage resulting during the hoax, the law doesn't seem to regard it on the level of felonious behaviour.
