A few comments on this issue. First of all: "guess Garth would rather join the Christian Heritage Party than the Green Party." I am sure they would appreciate his position in support of same sex marriage! "however Garth had better be aware of his earlier comments re Emersons crossing ...

People so quickly forget that before he became Ambassador, McKenna was associated with the Carlyle Group which is basically an organization of well-known political figures include George Bush, Sr., with extensive holding in the U.S. aerospace, telecommunications, defence, and homeland security indus...

Forum: Editorial Discussions Topic: Managed or 'real' democracy in Canada?

We all seem to have a concept of what constitutes democracy in mind but seldom do we make the effort to articulate it. For me democracy is not just a formal electoral system in which you get to place a mark before a name on a ballot every so many years. However, most political leaders today have res...

I just saw the same Blackburn quote. It is also quite enlightening to see what else he had to say. He is accusing the environmental policies of the Quebec government for the the closing of the Quebec mills and the loss of 1600 jobs because they reduced the size of logging areas. He is reported as sa...

The agenda here seems to be to turn back the clock on women's equality not necessarily on forcing women out of the workplace. It seems to be more focused on keeping women from progressing any further. This is both to make the religious fundamentalists, who oppose women's equality with men, happy and...

It seems that we are jumping the gun on this issue. Remember how the Liberals used to leak documents to get a feeling for public reaction? Then, when it was panned, they would quickly come up with some new but poorly thought out plan. I suspect that document was leaked for the same reasons. We shoul...

What amazes me is that every time Iggy says something that others react to he goes to the opposite extreme. He goes from saying he doesn't lose sleep about civilians being killed in Lebanon to saying its a war crime and then to saying that he supports Israeli actions unconditionally. Each is an extr...

The interesting thing is that the classical economists opposed this kind of elitist system. Adam Smith claimed that merchants and manufacturers should never be the rulers of men because they were too greedy. Even neo-classical writers like Hayek was opposed to privilege. This is why the modern right...

Just because there is a "mushroom cloud" does not provide evidence of a nuclear explosion. When the French munitions ship blew up in Halifax Harbour during World War I it created a huge mushroom cloud only surpassed by the nuclear explosions in Japan decades later.

The new Conservatism and the new Government operate on a series of ideological principles designed to entitle the more affluent segments of the economy. The prohibition against using government money for advocacy is designed to give more power to the monied class. In other words, freedom to promote ...

The more I see of Harper as Prime Minister the more convinced I have become that his intelligence has been extremely over-rated.

My understanding is that the agreement has been signed and that it has passed in Parliament but the implementation date has been changed (at least twice so far). Meanwhile, U.S. builders are seeking new sources for softwood lumber imports.

<a href="http://biz.yahoo.com/pr...

While the Softwood Lumber Agreement may be seen as good short term politics for the Republicans it seems to me to be terrible economics with intermediate and long term implications that are anything but positive. To bring in an agreement in restraint of trade as the U.S. faces a recession makes no l...
