Unfortunately, you have totally mistaken the context of the "hope" that at least some of us are talking about. It has little to do with Quebec parochialism but everything to do with much broader and more important issues of human adaptation, the environment, social progress, and leadership...

It is only when we give up that all hope is lost. Those of us who live in the real world of practical living try to catch every ray of hope we can and maybe, just maybe, we will endure.

There is nothing wrong in theory with devoting money to help women in the home although it should not be tied to the strings that are set up by private organizations. Programs to assist women in the home are important for those who need and want it, but the use of NGOs to interfere in the family is ...

Deacon wrote: "At the end of the day, for once, I found myself going to sleep with something approaching hope. Hope that the bad guys won't win after all." To me that is the key word: Hope. Dion's win gives hope to those of us who believe we need a different direction for the country. I ma...

To say that women should fund their own advocacy would only be a fair comment if the same resources were available to women as all other lobby, advocacy, and pressure groups. This "faith" based market ideology does not work for the disadvantaged in society. Groups such as the Fraser Instit...

Feminism is defined as the concept of "political, economic, and social equality for women." The new Conservatives and Harper are ideologically opposed to women's rights. In fact in 1997 Harper suggested to the meeting of a U.S. right wing think tank that they would be horrified that Canada...

I totally disagree that to oppose the "nation" concept for Quebec is by definition "bigotry." There are far deeper issues here than respect for the Quebecois. The fact that the Quebecois seek a formal recognition for the culture, something that Canadians have for a long time acce...

While the resolution does not have any teeth it can still have major consequences. That is because it will increase expectations in Quebec. While it may have been only meant as a political ploy there could be serious unintended consequences. We will have to wait to see what kind of fallout there mig...

It is not just the term "nation" that Harper has not defined but also Quebecois (is there any way here to add French language accents?). Like Paul Martin, Harper tends to talk too much because he went on to say that the term Quebecois should be defined by the Quebec legislature. This means...

In addition, like the PQ the BQ has now also realized the potential "hand-up" the resolution has given separatism and will support Harper's motion. This renders the entire political reasons for the Harper motion null and recognizes a "special status" for Quebec "on the recor...

Unfortunately, in my opinion, this is not exactly what Harper has done. If he had defined the Quebecois as a cultural group within all of Canada you would be correct. If you look at the entire context of Harper's speech he has clearly defined the term as something exclusive to the geographical bound...

There seems to be considerable confusion in the media over whether that is what the proposal means. To say that "Quebec" is a nation, which is what John McCallum indicated, is far different from saying francophone Canadians are a nation. In fact, Acadians consider themselves as a distinct ...

It is interesting that Stephen Harper has often spouted Adam Smith but obviously without a clear understanding of many of the points Smith made. Smith was totally opposed to mercantilism. One of my favourite quotes from The Wealth of Nations is this: "the mean rapacity, the monopolising spirit ...
