Forum: Editorial Discussions   Topic: One Canadian's Reflection On Sir John A. Macdonald's Legacy

So the question might well be - was Sir John A. a "mover and shaker" or did it happen that he was at the "right place at the right time"? Could someone else have done what he did? Or more to the point, does it matter nearly 150 years later?

Throughout the course of history, it's been demonstrated times after time that some people will do literally anything to attain and enhance their power. In most cases, this comes to the fore well after the proverbial "dust has settled". If Mr. Harper is the henchman of the devil (as Mr. Matthews ass...

From where Robin sits on the spectrum, I'm sure Svend Robinson looks a little right-wing. Whatever the technical definition is, fascism is an authoritarian ideology. Two things a fascist government would never do. - Eliminate a long gun registry - Eliminate a mandatory long-form census While the lo...

Remove the money factor and war would be swept into the dustbin of history.

$1:
With the Marshall Plan, the victorious allies showed that they had learned the lessons of the previous war.

Had the "allies" duplicated the Marshall Plan in Iraq, it's quite probable that ISIL(S) wouldn't exist today.
However, Arabs are not European........

The recent fiasco in Ottawa indicates that we'd prefer "Big Brother". The trouble with Dave's use of the term "libertarian" to describe me is that it can be interpreted as meaning I support some kind of free-for-all society in which the strong take what they want from the weak wi...

AKA: The Tragedy of The Commons? Is it at all possible for individuals (such as the Individualist in this forum) to determine personal maximum consumption without the threat of Big Brother (however benign)? I'm not quite sure that the "equality of outcomes" types on the left fully appreci...

Nearly 60 years of lassitude by a succession governments, in preparing for a future in which traditional work is an anachronism, is coming home to bite us. What was touted as the "leisure society" has materialized as what is fast-becoming the "unemployment/underemployment society"...

I don't think that's what Professor Dart is concerned about so much as it is the drive to make as much money and consume as much material goods for personal gain, without thinking about the larger purpose... AKA: The Tragedy of The Commons? Is it at all possible for individuals (such as the Individ...

We're heading into post-oil - and the first sources to fall will be the most costly.
Harper & Co. are very much like the dinosaurs who didn't know they were dead - but one had to watch out for the death throes, 'cause they will still kill ya.

Problem Solved? Hardly think so. The already-leaking tailing ponds have contaminated water systems beyond salvage. And putting a few grassy mounds where bogs once thrived is hardly a "problem solved". However, for those so inclined to see boxes instead of the whole, I will concede that nor...

I suppose, in order to "relate" to the pipeline, the tailing pond would have to be strictly and only the ones in the tarsands? Tailing ponds are tailing ponds. What they contain or originate from are just semantics. Nope. You are comparing apples to a Victorian Lamp. It doesn't matter how...

Witness the Mt. Polley spill, apparently the largest spill of it's kind in the world: Nope. Martin county Coal Slurry in 2000 was worse, with 1.1b litres of sludge, and the TVA Kingston Fossil Plant ash flow in 2008 was 1.1 billion gallons of some of the worst crap you can imagine. http://uploa...
