Looks good on them. No bail out without HUGE union concessions both in the US and Canada. I am sick and tired of hearing the CAW whinging about jobs when all they are interested in is protecting their fat-cat wage and benefit packages. Better a job at lower wages and benefits then no job at all.

Wow. The UAW would have its members lose their jobs, rather than accepting a pay-cut and therefore keep their jobs? So much for looking out for the best interests of your members. Oh this is so going to hurt. On the upside it's good to get the hurt over with if they are going to let them die.

I still don't think they will die (as in Chp. 7, selling everything). They will fix everyone's wages and get the books right. I guarentee they will be stronger and better if they go into Chp. 11. The only one who is gonna lose no matter what is the UAW.

It's the suppliers and the parts makers that are going to be killed here. When they declare these guys will be screwed as they will have not been paid for services rendered and they will be forced to close shop. Keeping the core jobs of the big three will only postpone the fallout as they will no longer have access to a ready supply of cheap material it will all have to be recreated from scratch. It's going to take a bailout much larger then what they are proposing here to save the domestic US auto industry. Frankly they are headed to the same demise as the Canadian one. There will still be cars to be made and sold but the profits and head office will be overseas.

Back in high school, there was a shipyard in Collingwood, made Lakers for 100 years.
Some tough times, no real work for a while, company was bidding on a job,
asked the unions to take an 8% pay cut for the duration of the job
( 1-2 years )

Unions went stupid, called for a strike on the job they were working on.

Company closed the yard the very next day.. boom
800 jobs in a 12,000 pop town.

Why the focus on the unions when the management has clearly steered the ship into the shoals? Beyond that this crisis in the economy is not something even the bad plans of the ceo's created. True, there is holes in the ship and it was taking water but the rouge wave that struck the ship was the credit crunch not wages. So, I understand they need to throw overboard everything that is dragging them down but I think this focus on the unions is simple union busting by the same crowd that created this financial mess to begin with. The motives of senators like Corker are suspect when he has no domestic plants in his state but every foreign plant has a head office there. We are talking $14 Billion here when they were fine spending half a trillion in Iraq.

We are talking about a tourniquet to stop the bleeding that will be tens of thousands of jobs and billions in losses domestics to say nothing of the hit that will happen when the stock market from the rest of the world react in horror and dump US dollars en mass.

It was the GOP under Corker that killed the deal, not the Unions. Over 2009 instead of 2011. It doesn't make sense to renegotiate contracts that were set to expire in 2011 anyway. This is nothing but Union bashing by ideologues on the right who have a feeble grasp of economics. Like I posted earlier, Unions could make the cars for free, it still wouldn't fix the problem here.

I too believe the automakers in Canada and the US should be left to sink or swim on their own. However, if they are bailed out then here in Canada other sectors of our economy, such as mining, fishing, forestry and manufacturing, have just as much right to expect something similiar. I hope that the unions, indeed, are brought to their knees during this crisis. The days of fat-cat union wages, benefits etc, etc. should and must be over.
