I've seen some weird shit involving radio signals. When I used to drive cab there was a certain grocery store where if I was parked right by the door, whenever I clicked the 'talk' button on my radio the automatic doors would open.
What was even weirder was at this one apartment building we used to get calls from regularly. Every time I clicked the radio when I was in the parking lot, one and only one apartment unit's lights would go off and on.
A lot of electronic devices are kind of random, especially if they are poorly made or tested. Most devices, in order to get certain certifications have to 'accept' any interference they receive from other things. But there are so many things out there that send signals, it's tough to account for every thing your design might receive.
Well designed ones will only operate with the signals they generate themselves, poorly made ones have side effects like you state.
With building codes changing recently to allow things like light switches to remotely operate lights via radio receiver, I can't wait for the fun that will bring!
