The RCMP so extremely gun shy now. They will do anything possible to bring a confrontation to an end without violence.

Should have just shot him on the spot.

Chumley Chumley: Should have just shot him on the spot. Couldn't he did not pose a immediate threat to the officers or anyone else besides himself once the bus was clear. If he charged them with the knife they could have but the more or less had to sit there and use language to get him to go with them. Last thing they needed was to knock the guy over the head and have him die, then the RCMP would have been painted as the bad guys.

Sucks to be them. Damned if they do. Damned if they don't.

No such word as couldnt, they could have shot him on the spot as he was commiting a crime and was endagerining the public. They would have taken some heat but not as much as they will for doing nothing at all. Just another show of Useless RCMP ness lol.
Not all RCMP are useless just 90% of them.

Not all RCMP are useless just 90% of them. The RCMP was not on scene until everyone ran off the bus, and the victim was already dead before the people got off the bus.

Not all RCMP are useless just 90% of them. Wrong, listen to the Sapper. The crime he was committing apparently was being a canibal. The victim was already dead. Unfortunately, you can not just walk on and shoot the guy for that. The threat of Greivous harm or death was no longer present. Maybe we need "Road Marshals" on ground transport now?

Cannibalism being an alternate lifestyle choice, the RCMP probably had to check with the CHRC before taking any action that might have been viewed as discriminatory.

I understand the mom is distraught and all over his son's grisly death, but I don't think the RCMP is where she's going to find her solace. I understand that the police watching a crazed man eat her son's corpse is hideous to any parent, but does she think that the police were minding their own business during that time? Maybe there's quite the rational explanation, like they were comparing the list of people off the bus with whatever sort of manifest they could muster to make sure that storming the bus wouldn't kill any other hostages. I understand we know now that he was only armed with a knife, but during the incident, how is one to clairvoyantly sense this?
I feel for this poor lady; it's a damnable shame the way her son died. But second guessing contemporary police action with hindsight won't solve a damn thing. I doubt anybody knew exactly what was going on, aside from the hysterical eye-witness reports and doing something for the sole sake of appearing to do something isn't necessarily the best answer.
Only one person died. Had the RCMP not responded as they did, who knows how many others would have too.

Why must the shot be through the head or through the heart?? They could have capped him in the knee or foot or something. Stopped him in his tracks... How did they know that there was not someone else cowering under a seat thus far undetected and also in harms way. There have been lots of cases of "Justified shootings" where the perp was standing still but carrying a knife and was shot for not releasing the weapon.
Fact is, there are a few folks that should get some blame here... where were the mental health workers that must have had a clue this guy was not all there. There are reports of him being schitzo, and having a history of not always taking medication. A history going back at least since he arrived in the country of taking sudden bus trips to nowhere... Somehow somewhere this guy fell through a crack in the system that should not have been there, and as a result one man died, and a bunch of other folks will have nightmares for life.

With all due respect of the mom--your kid was murdered by a psycho, not the RCMP. She just transferring the anger on to someone.
Cops don't shoot to injure, they shoot to kill. There's probably others here who kow why better than me, but I imagine one reason is that a moving kneecap is a hard target.

The RCMP cant just shoot some one because it would make it easier to end a conflict. At times they probably wish they could but that's not how things work. It's also my understanding the accused was pretty far under the radar for mental health. He had come to Canada with his wife, they both took up room and board in a church untill they were able to get on their feet. The church had told the papers that, they never noticed any odd behavior from him and that he spoke little english, so he kept to himself mostly. The reason he was on the bus was he worked at the same fair as the victim, and was comming home at the same time. I'm assuming the 'fair' that has been mentioned in Klondike Days.
