Very sad news, but, to be honest, age-67 is already a pretty remarkable achievement of mind over matter for a person so inflicted physically.

He's had close calls before. He's a stubborn old goat.

Hopefully he recovers. Seriously, he's one of our brilliant minds, but beyond that, he is a stubborn bastard as well

I can't wait.. he will literally be working a 5 minute walk from my place. And will bring another dimension to the two great universities we have here. Well that and I believe he wants to come here because 'Cambridge, ON' is only a 15 minute drive.

I'm torn. He's a tenacious man. He was given 2 years to live, 45 years ago. He already has 1 more ex-wife than I do. And the books he writes are way over my head, even when he 'dumbs' them down. And he's not finished his theories on everything; his life's work.

But, I also know he is in constant pain, and I hope he either is in less after this, or his pain is over..

I hope he pulls through, this man is the single greatest scientist of our generation. I can't help but think he was born 300 years early.

Monday 20th April, approx. 19:00 UK time

Due to very high demand, the website has been simplified to keep the server online. We apologise for the lack of in-depth content, which would normally be available here.

Professor Hawking is comfortable, but will be spending the night in hospital. The Cambridge University Press Office have a statement to this effect, and do not expect to have any further updates until mid-morning tomorrow.

I'm amazed, as are most people, that he has lasted this long. Most people who are diagnosed with ALS are dead within a few years of getting it. He must be one of the longest survivors of the disease, as he contracted it in his 20s, while attending university. I think he was on the rowing team at the time.
