Prime Minister Stephen Harper has declared the protection and promotion of Canada's sovereignty in the Arctic a "non-negotiable priority." The prime minister's comment came after the federal government announced earlier Friday that Canada will work to cre
Bravo Stephen, we need to protect that Northwest Passage because it is in Canadian territory. We have to protect it from the other countries. How would they like use just used their national waters to our pleasure.
I find it highly ironic that the article shows exactly what Arctic capability Canada has. Harper's been in office for four years and despite all his promises and tough talk, he still hasn't gotten around to improving our capabilities in the North.

That Liberal war in Afghanistan cost a lot of money.

Nice trolling...
Harper, not the Liberals, promised three armed icebreakers in the 2006 election, has held press conferences announcing his 'slsuhbreakers' twice (along with all sorts of other projects), and yet, FOUR years later, they don't even have a design approved, much less hulls being built.
If this was anything past the "We're hoping to build this sometime in the next decade' phase, he'd get credit. Instead, it's languished at the bottom of the priority pile while he sole-sources projects for equipment that doesn't need replacing for almost another decade (the F-35 purchase) due to recent upgrades.
The problem with Harper isn't money, it's priority.
His party announced a 'Canada First' strategy, yet hasn't done fuck all for Canada First. Instead, they've gotten nowhere on the Arctic Patrol Vessel file (AKA slushbreaker), has mothballed 8 of the Auroras we use to patrol our coastlines, and instead made sure that political purchases went to the front of the line (C-17s, C-130, CH-47), even though much of this equipment will arrive AFTER we've left that expensive "Liberal war in Afghanistan".
What's the point of spending billions on Chinooks right now, when we could (and did) lease them for immediate use in Afghanistan (I'll give Harper gets credit for leasing them though - even if it took him two years to do so). Instead, we're ALSO spending $3 billion for Chinooks that will arrive well after we leave Afghanistan. Same goes for the fancy new C-130Js. Yes, we needed to replace our current C-130 fleet (mostly E models from the 60s), but after spending $3 billion on four C-17s, it wasn't the huge priority Harper made it. That funding for that could have been slowed and other projects funded.
Harper's policy - talk tough and hope they don't notice you don't have a big stick. I guess it's no worse than the Liberals "talk out of both sides of your mouth at once" policy. (Which is why they're sunk - Chretien had the last mouth that was any good at that policy.)
Trolling? Give me a break. Ships aren't free. As you said he's been in power four years. How long did it take Chretien to replace our helicopters? Ya that's right.

Regardless, Harper hasn't done a whole lot except talk about the arctic. Bootlegga is right to criticize Harper's recent purchases and doing nothing but yammer on about the north. I'll start singing a different tune when I see some serious work going on up there, boots on the ground year round instead of just in the summer, and a truly dedicated and VISIBLE fleet up there that also operates year-round.

You mean the C-17 that are also being used in Canada right now to run supplies up to Alert taking three to four times the amount in one trip that it takes the Herc's in one.... The Herc's aren't a priority because of the C-17's? Ever had to spend an extra 5 days waiting to leave the arctic because your Herc was busted/broken and another was not available? I have not fun.

I've been in the Arctic in the Winter doing a SOVOP. Almost 200 of us for almost a month an it was in the news here, because back in February 2006 it wasn't all that big of a deal. We have be doing year round SOVOP's for years. BEFORE you start criticizing start basing your info on more then just base media reports.

200 men for almost a month. Really, that's all? This addresses my point how? If we really want to show we're serious, we'll be doing that with more troops year-round(thank god that training facility is being built, one of my few kudos to Harper), more air support, more aerial surveillance, and a goddamn arctic fleet that operates year-round.

SOVOPs are done year round, a dedicated Infantry reserve unit is (has?) been stood up in Yellowknife. What do honestly expect 2500 troops living in MOD tent at Resolute or Cambridge Bay until proper facilities are built?? Until that's done this is the best that can be reached.
