Fears of a Quebec backlash have delayed the Harper governments plan to give the growing parts of Canada a larger share of seats in the House of Commons. As a result, the changes the Tories promised in the spring campaign may not be in place in time fo

How odd. Quebec fearing that the rest of the country my become more equal, and Harper not standing behind a campaign promise.

"We want back in" - the Reform Party creedo. Remember that Stephen?

What's more surprising is that Harper still caves to Quebec despite holding basically no seats there.

If any party is going to do it, it should be the Conservatives. Let the Quebecers vote NDP. The Conservatives will just shore up more support in English Canada if they don't cave in.

This is exactly what is puzzling me about why Harper hasn't just ignored Quebec.

But Harper is going ahead with that. He just first had to drop his intention to short change Ontario. That has been done and an equitable new sharing agreed. Had he continues with his original numbers there might have been an Ontario separatist Party as a response.

Yeah, because historically, separatism has had a place in Ontario political and popular culture like Quebec and to a lesser extent, the West.

Maybe because he is Prime Minister of all Canada ?
That's the kind of thing you would hear from anti-ROC Quebecers, not fellow Canadians. Days before Harper announced a new bridge for Montreal, 'journalists' and other news people were saying Harper was planning to 'kill' Montreal by refusing to build a bridge, because we didn't vote for him...

However, I think he should proceed as planned. Seats should be added proportionally. If we don't deserve more than the 75 seats limit because we are not enough, than that's how it should be.

He'll add seats for Ontario and the West, but then give Quebec some more too, so we wind up with the same imbalance as before. Stevo is as much of a whore as any other politician, and will do anything to stay in power.

Personally I've written off Quebec. I don't even consider them a part of Canada any more. I don't mind paying a bit of bribe money to keep them in confederation, 'cause it would cost us a lot more otherwise, or so they tell me. But, I'm fed up with it.

Its ironic, but a lot of people feel the same way our andy does about Quebec as Quebeckers are lessening their affection towards separatism and finally beginning to think as themselves as a part of a federalist Canada. The massive swing away from the Bloc to the NDP shows that at the ballot box and that underlying trend is something Harper (even though the CPC got sweet FA vote-wise from Quebec) cant ignore.

Its good politics to grant those extra seats to Ontario and the West without really rubbing it into Quebecs nose how they are becoming less relevant to federal parties. Why make needless enemies?

The reality is that Quebecs day in the sun is over and any federal party that wishes to become a majority in parliament needs Ontario and the West more than it needs Quebec and the Atlantic provinces. Simple demographics.
