The federal Bureau of Public Debt was set up 50 years ago to accept donations to pay down the national debt. While Congress wrestles with the problem, many people are quietly sending in money.
What a silly program. You don't cure a heroin addict's addiction by giving them more heroin. You should be legitimately trying to keep as much money away from the government as possible. The government is the worst person in the world to be spending your money. Giving them more only encourages them.

True, but when a heroin addict quits cold turkey, the process isn't pretty; at least not as pretty as with a program. That's fine if it's just one person, but if it's an entire society, not so much. I'm a deficit hawk, but I realize that paying of the debt would be a multi-generational process.
Besides, politicians receive way more money in campaign donations than this program could ever hope to raise; money politicians actually care about. That's where you should cut the funds.
