Well at least Parliment is voting on giving the Minister these new powers. He is not just taking it upon himself to change immigration law as he sees fit without anyone else having a say on the matter, just to pander to a certain sect of the electorate a few months before an election.

I like the proposed changes. Long overdue, IMO.

On paper it sounds good, but is one person (the minister) going to be able to review the 250,000 immigration applications we have every year? Or am I being too literal and it will allow the Minister to appoint a task force to do that?

Like I said, it sounds good, but will it be effective?

Wow, that's quite a bold step to keep out muslims who preach hatred.

Like hatred isn't preached by non-muslims?

Oh, sure it is. But Canada has never had a problem with throwing them out (Ernst Zundel). Up until now it has seemed that the nutbar muslims have had a pass when it comes to their asshattery. Nice to see them receiving equal treatment.

Jinny Sims, the NDP's immigration critic, says she has serious concerns about the bill

What a shock, an NDPer that has a problem with tightening up immigration laws.
Immigration lawyer Lorne Waldman criticized the decision to remove the right of appeal for people sentenced to more than six months in prison.

"[The change] means that there will be no review of all of the circumstances and how the deportation order might affect children or spouses, family, etc.," Waldman said in an email to CBC News. "It means deportation regardless of how long the person is in Canada."

Oh look, an immigration lawyer that's afraid he won't be able to milk the system with appeal after appeal,
    quelle suprise

Of course, the solution is elegant in its simplicity. If you don't wanna get deported, don't commit any crimes.

This will just give the Minister a reason not to let anyone into Canada who espouses any beliefs not held by the Conservatvei party. It's a furghter centralization of power away from the people and into the PMO.

I wonder if Micahel Moore or Noam Chomsky will be turned away at the border for "public policy" reasons.

And the support for the right belies there supposed support for small government adn freedom. They want Big Government adn are happy to give away all their freedoms if only the gummint will make them feel safer.

Come on Zip. Changes like these have been about 30 years overdue. You should see how many 'refugees' I come into contact with, never in good situations.

We have enough home-grown idiots and criminals without importing other country's crims.
