As a fourth-generation Canadian citizen I formally refuse to fill out this census if there's a section on it that demands I identify my ethnicity. I'm a Canadian, period. No hyphenations. They can come and get me if they don't like it. :x

I wonder if I'll get one again?

If the distribution is truly random, then there is a good chance you will get at least one more in the future. ;)

Why? Why does it matter to you? 100 years from now when some grad student in history, using the census for her dissertation, happens upon your census page (among the millions of others) and notes your failure to answer one question, you can smile from your crypt about how you stuck it to the man. Of all the battles to feel it necessary to fight, you pick this one? :|

Because the federal government that is supposed to represent and serve us all equally shouldn't be using this data to make up ways to support some groups over others.

When someone looks at my US Census forms someday they'll be scratching their heads at a number of our responses.

Well first, that's crazy paranoia, but even if it weren't that would be a criticism about the USE of the data, not its collection. It's important to have a picture of our society and its demographics, its economic activities, religious affiliations, places of origin, etc, to hand down to future generations. Having accurate data for research purposes, years and years from now, far outweighs your silly trepidations about what the guv'ment might do to persecute your particular group to another's advantage.

Making up federal programs as rewards that are only open to a select ethnic few that have to be paid for by all is unfair. And is the worst kind of favoritism as far as ethnic politics are concerned. It's Animal Farm at its worst, all are equal but some are more equal than others.

Historically the Liberals previously used this kind of information to stuff Quebec full of programs and federal jobs, so this isn't some kind of anti-Muslim rant either. If you think it's fair for the government to treat some people better than others because of their ethnicity then say so. I'm openly saying that it isn't right, that it creates a graduated citizenship with entitlements for some based on a completely spurious reason that are denied to others. Once again, if you think this is fair then say it openly.

You're blaming the knife instead of the guy who stabbed the victim.
