True, but the hardware that is in circulation down here and the ease with which people can obtain it, whether legally entitled to or not, is sickening.

Imagine what the gunman might have been carrying if this had happened in the U.S.? Maybe there is something to be said for what type of firearms the average person can purchase and own.

If marriage is defined as being between a man and a woman, what happens to individuals who have ambiguous gender? Hermaphrodites are the most commonly known, but there is a dozen or so conditions which make gender difficult to determine. In some of these cases, the individual may look outwardly like...

After living in the US for 15 years, trust me, you don't want to end up with a two tier HC system: one for the rich, and one for the poor. If doctors are not paid well enough for their services, that needs to addressed. But you don't want to go down a path of letting some doctors just charge what th...

Articles such as this don't tell the whole story. I have lived in Texas for 15 years, and I am often asked if taxes here are less than in Canada. At best it is a hard question to answer. My gross salary is about 55K and my employer pays my health plan, which may cost me as much as $5000/yr in deduct...

Nice! Definitely a good couple weeks! People can also get certified as a track worker, and get the second best seat in the house - for free! Novice turn marshals would have a hard time getting enough experience in less than two years (especially for street race), but medics, firefighters, and crane...

The NASA report sited in the article does not say there is no global warming or climate change. What the NASA study claims is that CO2 is less of a factor than normally thought. So climate change models which rely on CO2 as a strong factor may be predicting much larger increases than will occur, and...

Part of me regrets that they are giving in. This is not just a mosque and it is not ON ground zero. It is a couple (or more) blocks away. How far should it be? 10 blocks? 20 blocks? If the attackers had all been christian zealots protesting whatever, would that mean a church could not be built there...

And if you're in a higher tax bracket you get nailed with the 15% capital gains tax and when your winnings push you into that bracket the 15% is witheld in addition to the 25% to 28% that is typically withheld. Sorry, but there is no capital gains on casino winnings. It is treated as ordinary incom...

This doesn't sound like they "backed" his release. They wanted him to stay in jail. But given that it was not their decision to make, they asked that he at least be forced to remain in Scotland, and not be returned to Libya.

I don't get any sense of approval by the U.S. at all.

The IRS witholds taxes from significant winnings and if you're a foreigner then I wish you luck getting the money back because in the USA casino winnings are taxed at the capital gains rate and then the full amount is also subject to Federal income tax and applicable local taxes. No, they are not t...

I've been in the US for 14 years and every time when I go home (Montreal) I make a bee line to TH. Except this year. For several years I have found the coffee going downhill, and last in T.O. I had such a bad experience at two different TH's trying to get breakfast, I decided that's it. I find the c...

I'm a tax preparer in Texas. I have never seen federal taxes withheld, but often state taxes are, when winnings are over $1200. (That might not be a magic number, it just always seems to be that amount or higher.) So in most cases it would be the state and not the IRS that you would have to deal wit...
