The continuing excuse for tanks has been to protect solders driving on Afghan roads. But tanks can't carry soldiers, they're useless for that job. A tank is a big cannon on tracks, there's no room for infantry; that may seem obvious but I'm amazed at how many people don't understand that. Tanks are...

I really do hate that term. We're not peacekeepers, it's just a role we fulfill.

Our current fleet is 30 years old, we were going to buy new ones in the early 90's but that was scrapped along with the Sea King replacement project. I have difficulty putting 100% faith in such a biased article, that clearly comes from a biased anti-military site as well. Actually, new tanks were ...

We need APCs such as the LAV III, not tanks. As the article states, everytime a soldier died from an IED there was a call to buy tanks, but tanks can't carry infantry so they're useless to protect infantry from IEDs. We have some old Leopard 1 tanks. From the time we purchased them, they were never...

Ditto to the British Para's. It's all in how you control the actions of the unit. You can punish or clean house without disbanding an entire regiment. They were simply the fall guys for high commanders that didn't want to bite the bullet on their own mistakes.

*pokes the fires Couple things. We have more than 8,000 personnel in the army, it's actually around 22,000, the army isn't just the combat arms (as an infantry officer I suddenly feel dirty extending that olive branch to the wogs). Also, we do have a presence in the arctic, they're called the Ranger...

It's amusing to look back on some posts and see the train of thought. CSOR being co-located with JTF-2 instead of in Pet etc. The other purpose other than supporting JTF-2 in a more direct role, is being able to deploy a company within 48 hours, the current Bn's don't have this capability and we nee...

I do wonder if the tank purchase was wise. I am one of those people who believes the tank's role has been replaced with other technologies. On, the open battlefield, I don't see how useful it could be against rocket batteries or artillary since they will still have more range. Helicopters and aircr...
