Forum: Editorial Discussions Topic: U.S. `gave up nothing' on softwood

The softwood lumber issue appears to me to be indicative of all the problems with the direction the new Conservatives want to take Canada. It is a perfect example of the "crony" capitalism that has become entrenched under the Bush Administration. The Bush administration is playing to certa...

The Arrow was an extremely expensive military plane with limited usefulness in peace time. Those who wanted to continue in this directions were eager for the development of a Canadian industrial defence industry during the "Cold War." I often wonder if the Arrow project has gone forward at...

I have a question that nobody seems to be able to answer. If someone is living on a pension but is under the age of 65 do they get the "pension" deduction? Previously anyone under the age of 65 was not eligible for the $1000 pension deduction. If they are not than most people in that group...

You are addressing exactly the problem. CAP has only one solution to everything. Unfortunately, policy development is not that simple. Anytime I have tried to get an answer to questions about CAP's policies outside their core policy no one is able to respond even if it is part of their official poli...

Would someone please define what they mean by left and right? It seems to me that these labels are totally meaningless. The new Conservatives defined the "left" as in favour of "big government" but it seems to me that the size of government has nothing to do with anything. The di...

It will be interesting to see how "the right," whose support for the Conservatives were based on Stephen Harper advocacy of free markets, will try to justify the compromise of those principles in order to get the Softwood Lumber Agreement with the US. This agreement is an extremely intrica...
Marcarc,

You've done an excellent job of presenting the case.

To go beyond this a bit the two priorities given by the current government for the Afghan mission are: "to protect the safety and prosperity of Canadians." This links defence ...

It would seem to me that this article is extremely appropriate to what just happened in the softwood lumber despute. The whole issue revolves around what is good for the big corporations and creating a means for them to control supply in order to keep prices and profits high.

The interesting fact about this "flip-flop" of Harper's is that this agreement virtually fixes the price of softwood lumber by controlling supply and abrogating the whole concept of "free markets." When Harper now talks about "free trade" or "free enterprise" ...

Anyone that knows how the military operates would know that soldiers are not permitted to speak out against their officers. They are required to support the positions of the hierarchy and ultimately those of the Chief of Defence Staff. The Chief of Defence Staff's job is to implement the policies of...

I largely agree with Geoffrey Stevens except on one point: the difference between principle and political posturing. That issue has come to the fore by the Conservatives characterization of political posturing. For example, when James Moore moved to have the flags lowered in respect for the death of...

"Canada is in Afghanistan to protect the safety and prosperity of all Canadians." -- Hon. Gordon O'Connor, Minister of Defence, during the take note debate in the House of Commons, April 10, 2006. I could not figure out how the Afghanistan mission could contribute to the "prosperity o...

There is no doubt that nothing has changed except the seating plan in the House of Commons.

The part of the debate I saw last night was useless for getting any real answers to what the mission in Afghanistan is all about. I turned it off in disgust.

...

Three points. 1. The Canadian government owns very little forest lands except in National Parks. The forests are largely owned by provincial governments. 2. Even provinces in which most of forest land is privately owned dumping fees still apply (I am not sure they are as high but they still apply). ...

I wonder how many other programs are being cut under the "dome of silence" that Prime Minister Harper has put into effect. There have been several of what you might call the hidden agenda "priorities" relating to program cuts starting to leak out. It seems that the real priority ...
