Forum: Current Events   Topic: B.C. teachers' strike: latest offer blasted by union members

There are some people who are determined to $hit on teachers, no matter what. I get that too.

Have at it. I'm not likely to change those minds. There's too much other baggage to deal with in trying to do so.

Yeah, all the cute "teddy bear" stuff. But the fact of the matter is that when a black bear takes it into mind that you're food, it's a top predator. A black bear not much bigger than a St. Bernard can easily kill and unarmed man, and it has happened many times. And I'm not talking a mothe...

Yes, OTI, withdrawal of those things tends to focus attention. Did you know that they are not part of teacher contracts? They are things that teachers do, and enjoy doing, because they're part of the package of a school being a good place to be. You're not privy to the anxiety that accompanies a wit...

No they wouldn't. I think they might. I'm talking about those who might be affected (even marginally) by the construction of the pipeline - people who live in the area (i.e. First Nations), not the outside do-gooders who couldn't see the benefits of economic development if they were run over by a t...

I taught for 34 years. You bet your sweet bippy I cared about my paycheque; I had a family of my own to raise. But the main reason I got into teaching was that I thought I would be good at it, and I was. And here's a revelation: In order to be good at teaching you have to care about kids. Teaching i...

Another good case for investing in a can of bear spray and a belt holster to carry it in.

I don't blame the joggers for being terrified. A black bear acting like that is just a impulse and a few seconds away from knocking down one of them and starting to chew.

I'm very worried about the BANANAS (Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anything) We've always had them, but they seem to have more influence these days, where people forget where a good chunk of our economy comes from. BANANA's - never heard that one. It's a good one. :) I think most of the opp...

KFC did the right thing. I can't even imagine the pain and trauma the little girl and her family went through, and to have some insensitive boor add to that?... unthinkable. The little girl's horrific injuries resulted from her grandfather's pit bulls attacking her. Just another incident to add to t...

B.C. teachers are among the lowest paid in the country.

They asked for an 8% salary increase over 5 years (hardly an unreasonable demand) and the government came back with a 10% wage reduction.

When an employer treats you like a brainless serf, why not go on strike if you can.

I fully agree that lots of people working on minimum wage may not have those same supports I had. So that's why I suggest the government can step in and provide help by offering grants for training courses, subsidized daycare as long as they stay in school, low cost loans for living expenses, etc. ...

The idea that there are always jobs out there that are better than minimum wage jobs is bogus. Besides just basic availbility, difficulties of commute when you can't afford a car and all sorts of other things come into play. You have to live it, or be around people who live it, to understand that it...

The majority of the people who earn minimum wage aren't full-time mom's and dad's looking to make ends meet. It's the kids in high school and college working part-time jobs for some spending money, tuition money or week-end drinking money. Go into your proverbial local Tim Horton's and see how many...

Here's some of his quotes about South Africa's extensive use of Coal for electricity, use that easily dwarves the carbon dioxide emissions of the oilsands:

Look, let's get real. A lot of people can't do any better than to get entry-level jobs, and we'd rather see them working and having a chance to make ends meet rather than supporting them on welfare or other government programs. It's easy to say we don't need a minimum wage, or that minimum wage is e...
