Landslides happen quite often here. Although the Jonsons Landing slide was huge... Last year, part of the high way slid as well. No casualties luckily.

I don't get the Government disaster financial assistance in these cases... if you can't get an insurance company to cover you for everything because they deem there is a risk (earthquake, mudslide, flood, tornado... whatever), don't build there. I don't have earthquake insurance here but that's a calculated risk on my part... if a 7.5 hits and I lose everything, I don't expect the government to step in.
